Psalm 107:33-43 -- New Life Version

He changes rivers into a desert and wells of water into a thirsty ground. ³⁴ He changes a land of much fruit into a salt waste because of the sin of those who live in it. ³⁵ He changes a desert into a pool of water and makes water flow out of dry ground. ³⁶ And He makes the hungry go there so they may build a city to live in. ³⁷ They plant seeds in the fields and plant grape-vines and gather much fruit. ³⁸ He lets good come to them and they become many in number. And He does not let the number of their cattle become less.
³⁹ When the number of people becomes less and they are put to shame under a bad power and trouble and sorrow, ⁴⁰ He pours anger on rulers. He makes them walk in the waste places where there is no path. ⁴¹ But He lifts those in need out of their troubles. He makes their families grow like flocks. ⁴² Those who are right see it and are glad. But all the sinful shut their mouths. ⁴³ Let the wise man think about these things. And may he think about the loving-kindness of the Lord.

A Song of Praise

My heart will not be moved, O God. I will sing. Yes, I will sing praises with my soul. ² Wake up, different kinds of harps. I will wake up the new day. ³ I will give thanks to You among the people, O Lord. I will sing praises to You among the nations. ⁴ For Your loving-kindness is great above the heavens. And Your truth can touch the sky. ⁵ Be lifted up high above the heavens, O God. Let Your shining-greatness be over all the earth. ⁶ Save us with Your right hand and answer me. Let Your loved ones be set free.

⁷ God has said in His holy place: “I will be full of joy. I will divide Shechem and the valley of Succoth. ⁸ Gilead is Mine. Manasseh is Mine. Ephraim is the covering for My head. Judah is My law giver. ⁹ Moab is where I wash My hands. I will throw My shoe over Edom. I will call out over Philistia that I have won.”

¹⁰ Who will bring me into the strong city? Who will lead me into Edom? ¹¹ Have You not turned away from us, O God? And will You not go out with our armies, O God? ¹² O give us help against those who hate us. For the help of man is worth nothing. ¹³ With God’s help we will do great things. And He will break under His feet those who fight against us.

Psalm 33 -- New Life Version

  

Song of Praise

Sing for joy in the Lord, you who are right with Him. It is right for the pure in heart to praise Him. ² Give thanks to the Lord with harps. Sing praises to Him with a harp of ten strings.  

³ Sing to Him a new song. Play well with loud sounds of joy. ⁴ For the Word of the Lord is right. He is faithful in all He does. ⁵ He loves what is right and good and what is fair. The earth is full of the loving-kindness of the Lord.

⁶ The heavens were made by the Word of the Lord. All the stars were made by the breath of His mouth. ⁷ He gathers the waters of the sea together as in a bag. He places the waters in store-houses. ⁸ Let all the earth fear the Lord. Let all the people of the world honor Him. ⁹ For He spoke, and it was done. He spoke with strong words, and it stood strong. ¹⁰ The Lord brings the plans of nations to nothing. He wrecks the plans of the people. ¹¹ The plans of the Lord stand forever. The plans of His heart stand through the future of all people. ¹² Happy is the nation whose God is the Lord. Happy are the people He has chosen for His own.

¹³ The Lord looks from heaven. He sees all the sons of men. ¹⁴ From where He sits He looks upon all who live on the earth. ¹⁵ He made the hearts of them all. And He understands whatever they do. ¹⁶ No king is saved by the power of his strong army. A soldier is not saved by great strength. ¹⁷ A horse cannot be trusted to win a battle. Its great strength cannot save anyone.

¹⁸ See, the eye of the Lord is on those who fear Him, and on those who hope for His loving-kindness, ¹⁹ to save their soul from death, and to keep them alive when there is nothing to eat.  

²⁰ Our soul waits for the Lord. He is our help and our safe cover. ²¹ For our heart is full of joy in Him, because we trust in His holy name. ²² O Lord, let Your loving-kindness be upon us as we put our hope in You.

Genesis 35:1-20 -- New Life Version

Jacob Returns to Bethel

God said to Jacob, “Get ready and go to Bethel to live. Make an altar there to God, Who showed Himself to you when you ran away from your brother Esau.” ² So Jacob said to those of his house and all who were with him, “Put away the strange gods that are among you. Make yourselves clean and change your clothes. ³ Then let us get ready and go to Bethel. I will make an altar there to God, Who answered me in the day of my trouble, and was with me every place I went.” ⁴ So they gave to Jacob all the strange gods they had, and the gold objects which they wore in their ears. And Jacob hid them under the tree near Shechem. ⁵ As they traveled, much fear from God came upon the cities around them. So the people of the land did not go against the sons of Jacob.

⁶ So Jacob and all the people who were with him came to Luz (that is, Bethel) in the land of Canaan. ⁷ He built an altar there, and gave the place the name El-bethel. Because God had shown Himself to him there, when Jacob ran away from his brother. ⁸ Then Rebekah’s nurse Deborah died. She was buried below Bethel under a tree. It was given the name of Allon-bacuth.

⁹ When Jacob came from Paddan-aram, God showed Himself to him again and brought good to him. ¹⁰ God said to him, “Your name is Jacob. You will not be called Jacob any longer, but Israel will be your name.” So his name was Israel. ¹¹ Then God said to him, “I am the All-powerful God. Have many children and add to your number. A nation and a group of nations will come from you. Kings will come from you. ¹² I will give you the land which I gave to Abraham and Isaac. This land I will give to your children and their children’s children after you.” ¹³ Then God went up from him in the place where He had spoken with him. ¹⁴ Jacob set up a pillar of stone in the place where He had spoken with him. And he poured a drink offering and also oil on it. ¹⁵ So Jacob gave the place where God had spoken with him the name Bethel.

¹⁶ Then they traveled from Bethel. When there was still a long way to go before coming to Ephrath, Rachel began to give birth. She suffered much pain. ¹⁷ And while she was suffering, the woman who was helping her said to her, “Do not be afraid. For now you have another son.” ¹⁸ As Rachel’s soul was leaving, for she died, she gave him the name Benoni. But his father gave him the name Benjamin. ¹⁹ So Rachel died, and was buried on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem).  

²⁰ Jacob set up a stone on her grave. And that is the stone of Rachel’s grave to this day.

– Избавьтесь от чужих богов, которые у вас с собой, очиститесь и переоденьтесь.  

³ Потом соберитесь в дорогу, и мы отправимся в Вефиль, где я построю жертвенник Богу, Который ответил мне в день бедствия и был со мной, куда бы я ни шел.

⁴ Они отдали Иакову всех чужих богов, которые у них были, и серьги из ушей^[a], и Иаков закопал их под дубом в Шехеме. ⁵ Потом они отправились в путь, и ужас Божий объял все города вокруг них, так что никто не преследовал детей Иакова.

⁶ Иаков и все, кто был с ним, пришли в Луз (то есть Вефиль) в земле Ханаана. ⁷ Там он построил жертвенник и назвал то место «Бог Вефиля», потому что там Бог открылся ему, когда он бежал от своего брата.

Смерть Рахили и Исаака

¹⁶ Они покинули Вефиль и были уже недалеко от Ефрафы, когда Рахиль начала рожать, и роды были очень трудные. ¹⁷ Она сильно мучилась при родах, и женщина, принимавшая роды, сказала ей:

– Не бойся – у тебя будет еще один сын.

¹⁸ Когда Рахиль испускала дух, умирая, она назвала сына Бен-Они^[g], но отец назвал его Вениамин^[h].

¹⁹ Рахиль умерла и была похоронена на пути в Ефрафу (то есть Вифлеем). ²⁰ Над ее могилой Иаков поставил памятный камень; это тот камень, что стоит над могилой Рахили до сего дня.

Epistle

1 John 3:11-18 -- New Life Version

This is what you have heard from the beginning, that we should love each other. ¹² Do not be like Cain. He was a child of the devil and killed his brother. Why did he kill him? It was because he did what was sinful and his brother did what was right.

¹³ Do not be surprised if the world hates you, Christian brothers. ¹⁴ We know we have passed from death into life. We know this because we love the Christians. The person who does not love has not passed from death into life. ¹⁵ A man who hates his brother is a killer in his heart. You know that life which lasts forever is not in one who kills.

¹⁶ We know what love is because Christ gave His life for us. We should give our lives for our brothers. ¹⁷ What if a person has enough money to live on and sees his brother in need of food and clothing? If he does not help him, how can the love of God be in him? ¹⁸ My children, let us not love with words or in talk only. Let us love by what we do and in truth.

Потому что его дела были злы, а дела его брата – праведны. ¹³ Не удивляйтесь, братья, если мир вас ненавидит. ¹⁴ Мы знаем, что уже перешли от смерти к жизни, потому что любим братьев. Тот, кто не любит, – тот еще во власти смерти. ¹⁵ Всякий, кто ненавидит своего брата, тот человекоубийца, а вы знаете, что ни в каком человекоубийце не может быть вечной жизни.

¹⁶ Любовь мы узнали в том, что Иисус отдал за нас Свою жизнь. И мы тоже должны быть готовы отдать жизнь за братьев. ¹⁷ Если человек, живущий в достатке, видит своего брата в нужде и не пожалеет его, то как в нем может быть Божья любовь?  

¹⁸ Дети, давайте будем любить не только на словах, языком, но и на деле, истинной любовью.

Jesus Hears about Lazarus

11 A man named Lazarus was sick. He lived in the town of Bethany with his sisters, Mary and Martha. ² This was the Mary who put perfume on the Lord and dried His feet with her hair. It was her brother Lazarus who was sick. ³ The sisters sent word to Jesus, saying, “Lord, your friend is sick!” ⁴ When Jesus heard this, He said, “This sickness will not end in death. It has happened so that it will bring honor to God. And the Son of God will be honored by it also.”

Jesus Tells of the Death of Lazarus

⁵ Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. ⁶ But when He heard that Lazarus was sick, He stayed where He was two more days. ⁷ Then He said to His followers, “Let us go into the country of Judea again.” ⁸ The followers said to Him, “Teacher, the Jews tried to throw stones at You to kill You not long ago. Are You going there again?” ⁹ Jesus said, “Are there not twelve hours in the day? If a man walks during the day, he will not fall. He sees the light of this world. ¹⁰ If a man walks during the night, he will fall. The light is not in him.”

¹¹ After Jesus had said this, He spoke again and said, “Our friend Lazarus is sleeping. I will go and wake him up.” ¹² The followers said to Him, “If he is sleeping, he will get well.” ¹³ But Jesus meant Lazarus was dead. They thought He meant Lazarus was resting in sleep. ¹⁴ Then Jesus said to them, “Lazarus is dead. ¹⁵ Because of you I am glad I was not there so that you may believe. Come, let us go to him.”

¹⁶ Thomas, who was called the Twin, said to the other followers, “Let us go also so we may die with Jesus.”

¹³ Иисус говорил им о том, что Лазарь умер, но ученики думали, что Он говорит об обыкновенном сне. ¹⁴ Тогда Он сказал им прямо:

– Лазарь умер. ¹⁵ Ради вас и ради того, чтобы вы поверили, Я рад, что Меня там не было. Но сейчас пойдем к нему.

¹⁶ Тогда Фома, которого еще называли Близнец, сказал остальным ученикам:
