Psalm 78:1-39 -- The Message
An Asaph Psalm
1-4 Listen, dear friends, to God’s truth,
bend your ears to what I tell you.
I’m chewing on the morsel of a proverb;
I’ll let you in on the sweet old truths,
Stories we heard from our fathers,
counsel we learned at our mother’s knee.
We’re not keeping this to ourselves,
we’re passing it along to the next generation—
God’s fame and fortune,
the marvelous things he has done.

5-8 He planted a witness in Jacob,
set his Word firmly in Israel,
Then commanded our parents
to teach it to their children
So the next generation would know,

so their children can trust in God,
Never forget the works of God
but keep his commands to the letter.
Heaven forbid they should be like their parents,
bullheaded and bad,
A fickle and faithless bunch
who never stayed true to God.

9-16 The Ephraimites, armed to the teeth,
ran off when the battle began.
They were cowards to God’s Covenant,
refused to walk by his Word.
They forgot what he had done—
marvels he’d done right before their eyes.
He performed miracles in plain sight of their parents
in Egypt, out on the fields of Zoan.
He split the Sea and they walked right through it;
he piled the waters to the right and the left.
He led them by day with a cloud,
led them all the night long with a fiery torch.
He split rocks in the wilderness,
gave them all they could drink from underground springs;
He made creeks flow out from sheer rock,
and water pour out like a river.

17-20 All they did was sin even more,
rebel in the desert against the High God.
They tried to get their own way with God,
clamored for favors, for special attention.
They whined like spoiled children,
“Why can’t God give us a decent meal in this desert?
Sure, he struck the rock and the water flowed,
creeks cascaded from the rock.
But how about some fresh-baked bread?
How about a nice cut of meat?”

They tried to get their own way with God,
clamored for favors, for special attention.
They whined like spoiled children,
“Why can’t God give us a decent meal in this desert?
Sure, he struck the rock and the water flowed,

21-31 When God heard that, he was furious—
his anger flared against Jacob,
he lost his temper with Israel.
It was clear they didn’t believe God,
had no intention of trusting in his help.
But God helped them anyway, commanded the clouds
and gave orders that opened the gates of heaven.
He rained down showers of manna to eat,
he gave them the Bread of Heaven.
They ate the bread of the mighty angels;
he sent them all the food they could eat.
He let East Wind break loose from the skies,
gave a strong push to South Wind.
This time it was birds that rained down—
succulent birds, an abundance of birds.
He aimed them right for the center of their camp;
all round their tents there were birds.
They ate and had their fill;
he handed them everything they craved on a platter.
But their greed knew no bounds;
they stuffed their mouths with more and more.
Finally, God was fed up, his anger erupted—
he cut down their brightest and best,
he laid low Israel’s finest young men.

32-37 And—can you believe it?—they kept right on sinning;
all those wonders and they still wouldn’t believe!

provoked Israel’s Holy God.
How quickly they forgot what he’d done,
forgot their day of rescue from the enemy,
When he did miracles in Egypt,
wonders on the plain of Zoan.
He turned the River and its streams to blood—
not a drop of water fit to drink.
He sent flies, which ate them alive,
and frogs, which bedeviled them.
He turned their harvest over to caterpillars,
everything they had worked for to the locusts.
He flattened their grapevines with hail;
a killing frost ruined their orchards.
He pounded their cattle with hail,
let thunderbolts loose on their herds.
His anger flared,
a wild firestorm of havoc,
An advance guard of disease-carrying angels
to clear the ground, preparing the way before him.
He didn’t spare those people,
he let the plague rage through their lives.
He killed all the Egyptian firstborns,
lusty infants, offspring of Ham’s virility.
Then he led his people out like sheep,
took his flock safely through the wilderness.
He took good care of them; they had nothing to fear.
The Sea took care of their enemies for good.
He brought them into his holy land,
this mountain he claimed for his own.
He scattered everyone who got in their way;
he staked out an inheritance for them—
the tribes of Israel all had their own places.

ваше к словам уст моих.
2 (77-2) Открою уста мои в притче и произнесу гадания из
древности.
3 (77-3) Что слышали мы и узнали, и отцы наши рассказали
нам,
4 (77-4) не скроем от детей их, возвещая роду грядущему
славу Господа, и силу Его, и чудеса Его, которые Он сотворил.
5 (77-5) Он постановил устав в Иакове и положил закон в
Израиле, который заповедал отцам нашим возвещать детям их,
6 (77-6) чтобы знал грядущий род, дети, которые родятся, и
чтобы они в свое время возвещали своим детям, --
7 (77-7) возлагать надежду свою на Бога и не забывать дел
Божиих, и хранить заповеди Его,

Всевышнего в пустыне:
18 (77-18) искушали Бога в сердце своем, требуя пищи по душе
своей,
19 (77-19) и говорили против Бога и сказали: 'может ли Бог
приготовить трапезу в пустыне?'
20 (77-20) Вот, Он ударил в камень, и потекли воды, и
полились ручьи. 'Может ли Он дать и хлеб, может ли приготовлять мясо народу
Своему?'
21 (77-21) Господь услышал и воспламенился гневом, и огонь
возгорелся на Иакова, и гнев подвигнулся на Израиля
22 (77-22) за то, что не веровали в Бога и не уповали на
спасение Его.
23 (77-23) Он повелел облакам свыше и отверз двери неба,
24 (77-24) и одождил на них манну в пищу, и хлеб небесный
дал им.
25 (77-25) Хлеб ангельский ел человек; послал Он им пищу до
сытости.
26 (77-26) Он возбудил на небе восточный ветер и навел южный
силою Своею

28 (77-28) поверг их среди стана их, около жилищ их, --

31 (77-31) гнев Божий пришел на них, убил тучных их и юношей
Израилевых низложил.
32 (77-32) При всем этом они продолжали грешить и не верили
чудесам Его.
33 (77-33) И погубил дни их в суете и лета их в смятении.
34 (77-34) Когда Он убивал их, они искали Его и обращались,
и с раннего утра прибегали к Богу,
35 (77-35) и вспоминали, что Бог--их прибежище, и Бог
Всевышний--Избавитель их,
36 (77-36) и льстили Ему устами своими и языком своим лгали

59 (77-59) Услышал Бог и воспламенился гневом и сильно
вознегодовал на Израиля;

Он между человеками;
61 (77-61) и отдал в плен крепость Свою и славу Свою в руки
врага,

Genesis 26:1-33 -- The Message
There was a famine in the land, as bad as the
famine during the time of Abraham. And Isaac went down to Abimelech, king of
the Philistines, in Gerar.
2-5 God appeared to him and said, “Don’t go down to Egypt; stay where I tell you. Stay here in this land and I’ll be with you and bless you. I’m giving you and your children all these lands, fulfilling the oath that I swore to your father Abraham. I’ll make your descendants as many as the stars in the sky and give them all these lands. All the nations of the Earth will get a blessing for themselves through your descendants. And why? Because Abraham obeyed my summons and kept my charge—my commands, my guidelines, my teachings.”
6 So Isaac stayed put in Gerar.
7 The men of the place questioned him about his wife. He said, “She’s my sister.” He was afraid to say “She’s my wife.” He was thinking, “These men might kill me to get Rebekah, she’s so beautiful.”
8-9 One day, after they had been there quite a long time, Abimelech, king of the Philistines, looked out his window and saw Isaac fondling his wife Rebekah. Abimelech sent for Isaac and said, “So, she’s your wife. Why did you tell us ‘She’s my sister’?”
Isaac said, “Because I thought I might get killed by someone who wanted her.”
10 Abimelech said, “But think of what you might have done to us! Given a little more time, one of the men might have slept with your wife; you would have been responsible for bringing guilt down on us.”
11 Then Abimelech gave orders to his people: “Anyone who so much as lays a hand on this man or his wife dies.”
12-15 Isaac planted crops in that land and took in a huge harvest. God blessed
him. The man got richer and richer by the day until he was very wealthy. He
accumulated flocks and herds and many, many servants, so much so that the
Philistines began to envy him. They got back at him by throwing dirt and debris
into all the wells that his father’s servants had dug back in the days of his
father Abraham, clogging up all the wells.
16 Finally, Abimelech told Isaac: “Leave. You’ve become far too big for us.”
17-18 So Isaac left. He camped in the valley of Gerar and settled down there. Isaac dug again the wells which were dug in the days of his father Abraham but had been clogged up by the Philistines after Abraham’s death. And he renamed them, using the original names his father had given them.
19-24 One day, as Isaac’s servants were digging in the valley, they came on a well of spring water. The shepherds of Gerar quarreled with Isaac’s shepherds, claiming, “This water is ours.” So Isaac named the well Esek (Quarrel) because they quarreled over it. They dug another well and there was a difference over that one also, so he named it Sitnah (Accusation). He went on from there and dug yet another well. But there was no fighting over this one so he named it Rehoboth (Wide-Open Spaces), saying, “Now God has given us plenty of space to spread out in the land.” From there he went up to Beersheba. That very night God appeared to him and said,
I am the God of Abraham your father;
don’t fear a thing because I’m with you.
I’ll bless you and make your children flourish
because of Abraham my servant.

25 Isaac
built an altar there and prayed, calling on God by
name. He pitched his tent and his servants started digging another well.
26-27 Then Abimelech came to him from Gerar with Ahuzzath his advisor and
Phicol the head of his troops. Isaac asked them, “Why did you come to me? You
hate me; you threw me out of your country.”
28-29 They said, “We’ve realized that God is on your side. We’d like to make a deal between us—a covenant that we maintain friendly relations. We haven’t bothered you in the past; we treated you kindly and let you leave us in peace. So—God’s blessing be with you!”
30-31 Isaac laid out a feast and they ate and drank together. Early in the morning they exchanged oaths. Then Isaac said good-bye and they parted as friends.
32-33 Later that same day, Isaac’s servants came to him with news about the well they had been digging, “We’ve struck water!” Isaac named the well Sheba (Oath), and that’s the name of the city, Beersheba (Oath-Well), to this day.

Спор с филистимлянами о колодцах
12 Исаак засеял поля в той земле и в тот же год собрал урожай стократно, и Господь благословил его: 13 он разбогател, и состояние его все росло, пока он не стал очень богатым. 14 У него были такие большие стада мелкого и крупного скота и столько слуг, что филистимляне завидовали ему. 15 Они засыпали землей все колодцы, которые еще во времена его отца выкопали слуги отца его Авраама.16 Авимелех сказал Исааку:
– Уходи от нас; ты стал слишком силен для нас.
17 Исаак ушел оттуда, поселился в герарской долине и обосновался там. 18 Исаак расчистил колодцы, которые были выкопаны во времена его отца Авраама, а затем засыпаны филистимлянами после его смерти, и дал им те же названия, какие прежде дал его отец.
19 Слуги Исаака стали копать в долине и открыли там колодец с родниковой водой, 20 но герарские пастухи затеяли ссору с пастухами Исаака, говоря: «Это наша вода!» Он назвал колодец Есек[a], потому что они спорили с ним. 21 Потом они выкопали другой колодец, но и из-за него вышла ссора, поэтому он назвал его Ситна[b]. 22 Он ушел оттуда и выкопал еще один колодец, из-за которого ссоры не было, и он назвал его Реховот[c], говоря: «Теперь Господь дал нам место, и мы умножимся в этой земле».
23 Он направился оттуда в Вирсавию. 24 В ту ночь Господь явился ему и сказал:
– Я – Бог твоего отца Авраама. Не бойся, Я с тобой. Я благословлю тебя и увеличу число твоих потомков ради Моего слуги Авраама.
25 Исаак построил там жертвенник и призвал Имя Господа и поставил там шатер, а слуги его выкопали колодец.
26 Авимелех пришел к нему из Герара вместе с Ахузатом, своим личным советником, и Фихолом, начальником его войска. 27 Исаак спросил их:
– Зачем вы пришли, ведь вы были враждебны ко мне и прогнали меня?
28 Они ответили:
– Нам теперь ясно, что с тобой Господь, и мы решили, что у нас должно быть клятвенное соглашение, между нами и тобой. Давай заключим союз, 29 что ты не причинишь нам вреда, как и мы не тронули тебя, но всегда обходились с тобой хорошо и отпустили тебя с миром. А теперь ты благословен Господом.
30 Исаак устроил для них пир, и они ели и пили. 31 На другой день рано утром они дали друг другу клятву; Исаак простился с ними, и они ушли от него с миром.
32 В тот же день слуги Исаака пришли и рассказали ему о колодце, который они выкопали. Они сказали:
– Мы нашли воду!
33 Он назвал его Шева[d], и до сего дня имя этого города – Вирсавия[e].

Hebrews 13: 17-35 -- The Message
Be responsive to your
pastoral leaders. Listen to their counsel. They are alert to the condition of
your lives and work under the strict supervision of God. Contribute to the joy
of their leadership, not its drudgery. Why would you want to make things harder
for them?
18-21 Pray for us. We have no
doubts about what we’re doing or why, but it’s hard going and we need your
prayers. All we care about is living well before God. Pray that we may be
together soon.
May
God, who puts all things together,
makes all things whole,
Who made a lasting mark through the sacrifice of Jesus,
the sacrifice of blood that sealed the eternal covenant,
Who led Jesus, our Great Shepherd,
up and alive from the dead,
Now put you together, provide you
with everything you need to please him,
Make us into what gives him most pleasure,
by means of the sacrifice of Jesus, the Messiah.
All glory to Jesus forever and always!

52-53 But they cut him off. “Are you also campaigning for the Galilean? Examine the evidence. See if any prophet ever comes from Galilee.”
Then they all went home.
To Throw the Stone
8 1-2 Jesus went across to Mount Olives, but he was soon back
in the Temple again. Swarms of people came to him. He sat down and taught them.
3-6 The religion scholars and Pharisees led in a woman who had been caught in an act of adultery. They stood her in plain sight of everyone and said, “Teacher, this woman was caught red-handed in the act of adultery. Moses, in the Law, gives orders to stone such persons. What do you say?” They were trying to trap him into saying something incriminating so they could bring charges against him.
6-8 Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger in the dirt. They kept at him, badgering him. He straightened up and said, “The sinless one among you, go first: Throw the stone.” Bending down again, he wrote some more in the dirt.
9-10 Hearing that, they walked away, one after another, beginning with the oldest. The woman was left alone. Jesus stood up and spoke to her. “Woman, where are they? Does no one condemn you?”
11 “No one, Master.”
“Neither do I,” said Jesus. “Go on your way. From now on, don’t sin.”

2 Рано утром Он опять был в храме. Вокруг Него собралось много людей, и Он сел и стал их учить. 3 Учители Закона и фарисеи привели женщину, уличенную в супружеской измене. Они поставили ее перед народом 4 и сказали Иисусу:– Учитель, мы поймали эту женщину на месте преступления, она изменила мужу! 5 Моисей повелевает в Законе побивать таких камнями[a]. А Ты что скажешь?
6 Они спросили это, чтобы найти повод уловить Иисуса в чем-либо и обвинить Его[b]. Иисус склонился и писал пальцем на земле. 7 Они упрямо продолжали Его спрашивать. Тогда Иисус выпрямился и сказал:
– Кто из вас без греха, пусть первым бросит в нее камень.
8 И Он опять, склонившись, продолжал писать на земле. 9 Тогда они начали по одному уходить, начиная с самых старших. В конце концов остались только Иисус и женщина.
10 Иисус выпрямился и спросил:
– Женщина, где твои обвинители? Разве никто не осудил тебя?
11 – Никто, Господин, – ответила она.
– И Я тебя не осуждаю, – сказал Иисус. – Иди и больше не греши[c].
