Psalm 102 – The Voice
A prayer of the weak and oppressed, when he turns his complaints to the Eternal.
1 Hear
me, O Eternal One, hear my prayer!
Hear my lonely desperate cry for help.
2 Do not hide from me
when my days are filled with anguish; Lend Your ear to my wailing,
and answer me quickly when I call.

3 For my days come and go, vanishing like smoke,
and my bones are charred like bricks of a hearth.
4 My heart is beaten down like grass withered and scorched in the summer heat;

my bones cling to my skin, holding on for dear life. 6 I am like a solitary owl in the wilderness;
I am a lost and lonely screech owl at home in the rubble. 7 I stare at the ceiling, awake in my bed;
I am alone, a defenseless sparrow perched on a roof. 8 All day long my enemies chide me;
those who mock me spit out my name as a curse. 9 For ashes have become my bread;
my tears fall into my drink 10 Because of the depth of Your wrath.
You have brought me up
and then hurled me aside. 11 My days go by like a long shadow—stretched thin and disappearing—
I shrivel up like grass baked in the hot sun.

yes, it is the divinely appointed time. 14 Your faithful servants take pleasure in her every stone;
they even delight in the dust of her streets. 15 Days are coming when nations will tremble at the name of the Eternal;
all the rulers of the earth will bow down to Your glory. 16 For He will return to rebuild His city, Zion;
He will be seen in His splendor. 17 He will listen to the prayer of the impoverished
and welcome their prayers.

13 You will rise up once again and remember Your love for Zion;
it is time to have mercy on Your city;

Your years will never come to an end.[a] 28 The children of those who serve You will enjoy a good, long life;
their offspring will stand strong before You.

Psalm 107:1-32 – The Voice
Book Five
Book Five (Psalms
107–150) succinctly presents many of the major themes of the
previous psalms. It tracks along Israel’s history as God’s nation, from the
united monarchy, through the exile, to the restoration. Psalm 107
is a song of thanksgiving composed by those who survived exile and made their
way home. As in Isaiah, the return from exile is described as a new exodus.
Three Davidic psalms toward the beginning of Book Five represent the monarchy
and recall Israel’s golden age. The Songs for the Journey to Worship (Psalm
120–134) are composed for use by God’s people as they traveled from
their homes up to Zion to worship God at the temple. Representing their time in
exile are songs of lament, heartbreaking testimonies to individuals’ pain when
they are crushed by their enemies and separated from God’s blessings. Finally,
Book Five concludes the collection by offering praise and thanks to God, for
the story of Israel does not end with its exile and separation; rather, it ends
in restoration and hope. Those who edited and compiled the Book of Psalms were
relieved to be back in the land of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob—rebuilding their
temple and reestablishing their connection with God.

with thanks to the Eternal, for He is good
and His loyal love lasts forever.
2 Let all those redeemed by the Eternal—
those rescued from times of deep trouble—join in giving thanks. 3 He has gathered them across the earth,
from east and west,

when they stumbled and fell, there was no one to help them up. 13 In their distress, they called out to the Eternal;
He saved them from their misery. 14 He rescued them from the darkness, delivered them from the deepest gloom of death;
He shattered their iron chains. 15 May they erupt with praise and give thanks to the Eternal
in honor of His loyal love And all the wonders He has performed for humankind! 16 He has broken down the bronze gates
and severed the iron bars that imprisoned them.

and they had no idea what to do. 28 In their distress, they called out to the Eternal,
and He saved them from their misery. 29 He commanded the storm to calm down, and it became still.
A hush came over the waves of the sea, 30 The sailors were delighted at the quiet,
and He guided them to their port. 31 May they erupt with praise and give thanks to the Eternal

Gen 32:22-33:17 – The Voice
Later that same night, Jacob got
up and took his two wives, his two female servants, and his 11 children; and he
crossed the Jabbok River. 23 He sent them all ahead
across the stream along with everything he had; 24 but Jacob stayed
behind, left alone in his distress and doubt. In the twilight of his
anguish, an unknown man wrestled with him until daybreak.
25 When
the man saw he was not winning the battle with Jacob, he struck him on the hip
socket, and Jacob’s hip was thrown out of joint as he continued to wrestle with
him.
Man: 26 Let me
go; the dawn is breaking.
Jacob: I will not let you go
unless you bless me.
Man: 27 What’s
your name?
Jacob: Jacob.
Man: 28 You
will no longer go by the name Jacob. From now on, your name will be
Israel because you have wrestled with God and humanity, and you have prevailed.
Jacob: 29 Please,
tell me your name.
Man: Why do you ask what my
name is?

there the man blessed Jacob. 30 So Jacob called the place
Peniel because as he said, “I have come face to face with God, and yet my life
was spared.” 31 The sun began to rise as Jacob passed by
Penuel, limping because of his dislocated hip. 32 And to
this day, the Israelites do not eat the tendon attached near the hip socket of
any animal, since that is where God struck Jacob when He dislocated his
hip.
33 Jacob
looked up and saw Esau coming, and 400 men were with him. Jacob quickly divided
the children among Leah and Rachel and their two servants. 2 He
put the female servants with their children in front, then Leah with her
children, and Rachel and Joseph last of all. 3 He himself went
on ahead of them, and he bowed to the ground seven times as he approached his
brother. 4 But Esau ran to meet him. He embraced Jacob, kissed
his neck, and they both cried. 5 Esau looked up and saw the
women and children.
Esau: Who are these people with
you?
Jacob: These are the children God
has graciously given your servant.
6 Then the female servants
came closer, along with their children, and they bowed down.
7 Leah
did likewise; she and her children approached and bowed down. Finally Joseph
and Rachel came forward, and they bowed down as well.
Esau: 8 What was
your intent in sending all of your men and herds ahead of you?
Jacob: I hope to find
favor with you, my master.
Esau: 9 I have
enough, my brother. Keep what you have for yourself.
Jacob
expects trouble from Esau, but he finds the pain of the past healed. Now Esau
wants nothing from his brother.
Jacob: 10 No,
please. If I have found favor with you after all these years, please
accept the gifts I offer. Seeing your face again is like seeing the face
of God, so graciously and warmly have you welcomed me. 11 Please
accept the blessing I bring. God has graciously provided for me and my
family. I have everything I could want.
Jacob
kept insisting that Esau accept the gift. Finally he did.
Esau: 12 Now
let’s be on our way, and I will walk on ahead of you.
Jacob: 13 My
master knows that the children are very small and the nursing flocks and herds
are under my care. If they are driven too hard for even one day, I’m afraid
I’ll lose all the flocks. 14 Please, my master, go on ahead of
me, and I will keep on at a slower pace—the pace of the animals up ahead and
the children—until I come to you in Seir.
Esau: 15 Let me
leave some of my people to accompany you.
Jacob: Why go to all that
trouble? You have done enough already. Just let me find favor with my
master.
16 Esau agreed and set out
that day to go back to Seir. 17 But Jacob journeyed instead
to Succoth, and he built himself a house there and put up some shelters for his
cattle. That’s why this place is called Succoth, which means “shelters.”

of God! It’s true; we are His beloved children. And in the same way the
world didn’t recognize Him, the world does not recognize us either.
When
we feel like we are not good enough to be loved by God, we should remember that
God’s love is greater than our doubts. We must silence the sounds of
condemnation so we can hear the voice of God’s loving assurance and remember
that He has selected us to be part of His family.
2 My loved ones, we have
been adopted into God’s family; and we are officially His children now. The
full picture of our destiny is not yet clear, but we know this much: when Jesus
appears, we will be like Him because we will see Him just as He is. 3 All
those who focus their hopes on Him and His coming seek to purify themselves
just as He is pure.
4 Everyone who lives a life
of habitual sin is living in moral anarchy. That’s what sin is. 5 You
realize that He came to eradicate sins, that there is not the slightest bit of
sin in Him. 6 The ones who live in an intimate relationship
with Him do not persist in sin, but anyone who persists in sin has not seen
and does not know the real Jesus.
7 Children, don’t let anyone
pull one over on you. The one doing the right thing is just imitating Jesus,
the Righteous One.
If
you are wondering if your faith is authentic, take a look at your life. Are you
doing what is right?
8 The one persisting in sin
belongs to the diabolical one, who has been all about sin from the beginning.
That is why the Son of God came into our world: to destroy the plague of
destruction inflicted on the world by the diabolical one.
9 Everyone who has been born
into God’s family avoids sin as a lifestyle because the genes of God’s
children come from God Himself. Therefore, a child of God can’t live a life of
persistent sin. 10 So it is not hard to figure out who are the
children of God and who are the children of the diabolical one: those who lack
right standing and those who don’t show love for one another do not belong to
God.

John 10:31-42 – The Voice
The Jews gathered stones to execute Jesus
right then and there.
Jesus: 32 I have performed many beautiful works
before you in the name of the Father. Which of these can be judged as an
offense that merits My execution?
Jews: 33 You are not condemned for performing
miracles. We demand Your life because You are a man, yet you claim to be God.
This is blasphemy!
Jesus: 34 You know what is written in
the Scriptures. Doesn’t it read, “I said, you are gods”?[a]
35 If the Scriptures called your
ancestors (mere mortals) gods to whom the word of God came—and the
Scriptures cannot be set aside— 36 what should you call One who is unique,
sanctified by and sent from the Father into the world? I have said, “I am God’s
Son.” How can you call that blasphemy? 37 By
all means, do not believe in Me, if I am not doing the things of the
Father. 38 But examine My
actions, and you will see that My work is the work of the Father.
Regardless of whether you believe in Me—believe the miracles. Then you will
know that the Father is in Me, and I am in the Father.
39 Once again, some of the Jews tried to capture Him,
but He slipped away, eluding their grasp. 40 Jesus
crossed the Jordan River and returned to the place where John was ritually
cleansing the people through baptism[b]
in the early days. He lingered in the area, 41 and scores of people gathered around Him.
Crowds: John
never performed any miracles, but every word he spoke about this man has come
to pass. It is all true!
42 In that place, many believed in Him.
