(A psalm by Asaph for the music leader. To the tune “Lilies of the Agreement.”)

Help Our Nation

Shepherd of Israel, you lead
    the descendants of Joseph,
and you sit on your throne
    above the winged creatures.^[a]
Listen to our prayer
    and let your light shine
²     for the tribes of Ephraim,
Benjamin, and Manasseh.
    Save us by your power.

³ Our God, make us strong again!
    Smile on us and save us.

⁴ Lord God All-Powerful,
    how much longer
    will the prayers of your people
    make you angry?
⁵ You gave us tears for food,
    and you made us drink them
    by the bowlful.
⁶ Because of you,
our enemies who live nearby
    laugh and joke about us.
⁷ But if you smile on us,
    we will be saved.

⁸ We were like a grapevine
    you brought out of Egypt.
    You chased other nations away
    and planted us here.
⁹ Then you cleared the ground,
    and we put our roots deep,
    spreading over the land.
¹⁰ Shade from this vine covered
    the mountains.
Its branches
climbed
the mighty cedars
¹¹     and stretched to the sea;
    its new growth reached
    to the river.^[b]

¹² Our Lord, why have you
torn down the wall
    from around the vineyard?
You let everyone who walks by
    pick the grapes.
¹³     Now the vine is gobbled down
by pigs from the forest
    and other wild animals.

¹⁴ God All-Powerful,
    please do something!
Look down from heaven
and see what’s happening
    to this vine.
¹⁵ With your own hands
    you planted its roots,
and you raised it
    as your very own.

¹⁶ Enemies chopped the vine down
    and set it on fire.
    Now show your anger
    and destroy them.
¹⁷ But help the one who sits
    at your right side,^[c]
    the one you raised
    to be your own.
¹⁸ Then we will never turn away.
    Put new life into us,
    and we will worship you.

¹⁹ Lord God All-Powerful,
make us strong again!

In Times of Trouble God Is with His People

I pray to you, Lord God,
    and I beg you to listen.
²     In days filled with trouble,
    I search for you.
And at night I tirelessly
lift my hands in prayer,
    refusing comfort.
³ When I think of you,
    I feel restless and weak.

⁴ Because of you, Lord God,
    I can’t sleep.
I am restless
    and can’t even talk.
⁵     I think of times gone by,
    of those years long ago.
⁶ Each night my mind
    is flooded with questions:^[a]
7 “Have you rejected me forever?
    Won’t you be kind again?
⁸ Is this the end of your love
    and your promises?
⁹ Have you forgotten
    how to have pity?
    Do you refuse to show mercy
    because of your anger?”
¹⁰ Then I said, “God Most High,
    what hurts me most
    is that you no longer help us
    with your mighty arm.”

¹¹ Our Lord, I will remember
the things you have done,
    your miracles of long ago.
¹² I will think about each one
    of your mighty deeds.
¹³ Everything you do is right,
    and no other god
    compares with you.

    and you have let nations
    see your mighty power.

Have Pity on Jerusalem

Our God, foreign nations
    have taken your land,
    disgraced your temple,
    and left Jerusalem in ruins.
² They have fed the bodies
of your servants
    to flesh-eating birds;
    your loyal people are food
    for savage animals.
³ All Jerusalem is covered
    with their blood,
    and there is no one left
    to bury them.
⁴ Every nation around us
    sneers and makes fun.

⁵ Our Lord, will you keep on
    being angry?
    Will your angry feelings
    keep flaming up like fire?
⁶ Get angry with those nations
that don’t know you
    and won’t worship you!
⁷ They have gobbled down
Jacob’s descendants
    and left the land in ruins.

⁸ Don’t make us pay for the sins
    of our ancestors.
    Have pity and come quickly!
    We are completely helpless.
⁹ Our God, you keep us safe.
    Now help us! Rescue us.
    Forgive our sins
    and bring honor to yourself.

¹⁰ Why should nations ask us,
    “Where is your God?”
Let us and the other nations
    see you take revenge
    for your servants who died
    a violent death.

Genesis 25:19-34 – Contemporary English Version

The Birth of Esau and Jacob

Isaac was the son of Abraham, ²⁰ and he was forty years old when he married Rebekah, the daughter of Bethuel. She was also the sister of Laban, the Aramean from northern Syria.^[a]
Almost twenty years later, ²¹ Rebekah still had no children. So Isaac asked the Lord to let her have a child, and the Lord answered his prayer.

²² Before Rebekah gave birth, she knew she was going to have twins, because she could feel them inside her, fighting each other. She thought, “Why is this happening to me?” 

Finally, she asked the Lord why her twins were fighting, ²³ and he told her:

“Your two sons will become
    two separate nations.^[b]
The younger of the two
    will be stronger,
and the older son
    will be his servant.”

²⁴ When Rebekah gave birth, ²⁵ the first baby was covered with red hair, so he was named Esau.^{[c] 26} The second baby grabbed on to his brother’s heel, so they named him Jacob.^[d] Isaac was sixty years old when they were born.

Esau Sells His Rights as the First-Born Son

²⁷ As Jacob and Esau grew older, Esau liked the outdoors and became a good hunter, while Jacob settled down and became a shepherd. ²⁸ Esau would take the meat of wild animals to his father Isaac, and so Isaac loved him more, but Jacob was his mother’s favorite son.

²⁹ One day, Jacob was cooking some stew, when Esau came home hungry ³⁰ and said, “I’m starving to death! Give me some of that red stew right now!” That’s how Esau got the name “Edom.”<sup>[e]

31</sup> Jacob replied, “Sell me your rights as the first-born son.”<sup>[f]

32</sup> “I’m about to die,” Esau answered. “What good will those rights do me?”

³³ But Jacob said, “Promise me your birthrights, here and now!” And that’s what Esau did.  

³⁴ Jacob then gave Esau some bread and some of the bean stew, and when Esau had finished eating and drinking, he just got up and left, showing how little he thought of his rights as the first-born.

Hebrews13:1-16 – Contemporary English Version

Service That Pleases God

Keep being concerned about each other as the Lord’s followers should.

² Be sure to welcome strangers into your home. By doing this, some people have welcomed angels as guests, without even knowing it.

³ Remember the Lord’s people who are in jail and be concerned for them. Don’t forget those who are suffering, but imagine that you are there with them.

⁴ Have respect for marriage. Always be faithful to your partner, because God will punish anyone who is immoral or unfaithful in marriage.

⁵ Don’t fall in love with money. Be satisfied with what you have. The Lord has promised that he will not leave us or desert us. ⁶ That should make you feel like saying,

“The Lord helps me!
Why should I be afraid
    of what people
    can do to me?”

⁷ Don’t forget about your leaders who taught you God’s message. Remember what kind of lives they lived and try to have faith like theirs.

⁸ Jesus Christ never changes! He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. ⁹ Don’t be fooled by any kind of strange teachings. It is better to receive strength from God’s undeserved kindness than to depend on certain foods. After all, these foods don’t really help the people who eat them. ¹⁰ But we have an altar where even the priests who serve in the place of worship have no right to eat.

¹¹ After the high priest offers the blood of animals as a sin offering, the bodies of those animals are burned outside the camp. ¹² Jesus himself suffered outside the city gate, so that his blood would make people holy. ¹³ That’s why we should go outside the camp to Jesus and share in his disgrace. ¹⁴ On this earth we don’t have a city that lasts forever, but we are waiting for such a city.

¹⁵ Our sacrifice is to keep offering praise to God in the name of Jesus. ¹⁶ But don’t forget to help others and to share your possessions with them. This too is like offering a sacrifice that pleases God.

John 7:37-52 – Contemporary English Version

The Jewish leaders asked each other, “Where can he go to keep us from finding him? Is he going to some foreign country where our people live? Is he going there to teach the Greeks?^{[a] 36} What did he mean by saying that we will look for him, but won’t find him? Why can’t we go where he is going?”

Streams of Life-Giving Water

³⁷ On the last and most important day of the festival, Jesus stood up and shouted, “If you are thirsty, come to me and drink! ³⁸ Have faith in me, and you will have life-giving water flowing from deep inside you, just as the Scriptures say.” ³⁹ Jesus was talking about the Holy Spirit, who would be given to everyone that had faith in him. The Spirit had not yet been given to anyone, since Jesus had not yet been given his full glory.^[b]

The People Take Sides

⁴⁰ When the crowd heard Jesus say this, some of them said, “He must be the Prophet!”^{[c] 41} Others said, “He is the Messiah!” Others even said, “Can the Messiah come from Galilee? ⁴² The Scriptures say that the Messiah will come from the family of King David. Doesn’t this mean that he will be born in David’s hometown of Bethlehem?” ⁴³ The people started taking sides against each other because of Jesus. ⁴⁴ Some of them wanted to arrest him, but no one laid a hand on him.

The Leaders Refuse To Have Faith in Jesus

⁴⁵ When the temple police returned to the chief priests and Pharisees, they were asked, 

“Why didn’t you bring Jesus here?”

⁴⁶ They answered, “No one has ever spoken like that man!”

⁴⁷ The Pharisees said to them, “Have you also been fooled? ⁴⁸ Not one of the chief priests or the Pharisees has faith in him. ⁴⁹ And these people who don’t know the Law are under God’s curse anyway.”

⁵⁰ Nicodemus was there at the time. He was a member of the council, and was the same one who had earlier come to see Jesus.^[d] He said, ⁵¹ “Our Law doesn’t let us condemn people before we hear what they have to say. We cannot judge them before we know what they have done.”

⁵² Then they said, “Nicodemus, you must be from Galilee! Read the Scriptures, and you will find that no prophet is to come from Galilee.”

В последний и самый торжественный день праздника Иисус встал и громко возгласил:

– Кто хочет пить, пусть приходит ко Мне и пьет^[a]. ³⁸ Кто верит в Меня, как говорит Писание, у того из сердца^[b] потекут реки живой воды.

³⁹ Иисус имел в виду Духа, Которого поверившие в Него должны были позже получить. Дух еще не был дан верующим, так как Иисус еще не был прославлен.

⁴⁰ Некоторые люди в толпе, услышав слова Иисуса, сказали:

– Он действительно Тот Самый Пророк!

⁴¹ Другие говорили:

– Он – Христос!
 
Третьи говорили:

⁴⁵ Когда стражники храма возвратились к первосвященникам и фарисеям, те спросили их:

– Почему вы не привели Его?

– Никто еще так не говорил, как Этот Человек.

⁴⁷ – Он что, и вас тоже обманул? – спросили фарисеи. ⁴⁸ – Разве хоть один из начальников или из фарисеев Ему поверил? ⁴⁹ А что эта толпа понимает в Законе? Эти люди прокляты.

⁵⁰ Никодим, один из фарисеев, который как-то раньше приходил к Иисусу, спросил:

⁵¹ – Разве наш Закон дает право судить человека, не выслушав его вначале и не узнав, что он делает?

⁵² Они ответили:

– Ты что, тоже из Галилеи? Посмотри в Писании, и ты увидишь, что ни один пророк^[e] из Галилеи не приходит.
