Psalm 42 – The Message

A psalm of the sons of Korah

^1-3 A white-tailed deer drinks

    from the creek;
I want to drink God,
    deep draughts of God.
I’m thirsty for God-alive.
I wonder, “Will I ever make it—
    arrive and drink in God’s presence?”
I’m on a diet of tears—
    tears for breakfast, tears for supper.
All day long
    people knock at my door,
Pestering,
    “Where is this God of yours?”

⁴ These are the things I go over and over,
    emptying out the pockets of my life.
I was always at the head of the worshiping crowd,
    right out in front,
Leading them all,
    eager to arrive and worship,
Shouting praises, singing thanksgiving—
    celebrating, all of us, God’s feast!

⁵ Why are you down in the dumps, dear soul?
    Why are you crying the blues?
Fix my eyes on God—
    soon I’ll be praising again.
He puts a smile on my face.
    He’s my God.

^6-8 When my soul is in the dumps, I rehearse
    everything I know of you,
From Jordan depths to Hermon heights,
    including Mount Mizar.
Chaos calls to chaos,
    to the tune of whitewater rapids.
Your breaking surf, your thundering breakers
    crash and crush me.
Then God promises to love me all day,
    sing songs all through the night!
    My life is God’s prayer.

^9-10 Sometimes I ask God, my rock-solid God,
    “Why did you let me down?
Why am I walking around in tears,
    harassed by enemies?”
They’re out for the kill, these
    tormentors with their obscenities,
Taunting day after day,
    “Where is this God of yours?”

    against these loveless, immoral people.
Get me out of here, away
    from these lying degenerates.
I counted on you, God.
    Why did you walk out on me?
Why am I pacing the floor, wringing my hands
    over these outrageous people?

^3-4 Give me your lantern and compass,
    give me a map,
So I can find my way to the sacred mountain,
    to the place of your presence,
To enter the place of worship,
    meet my exuberant God,
Sing my thanks with a harp,
    magnificent God, my God.

Psalm 85 – The Message

A Korah Psalm

85 ^1-3 God, you smiled on your good earth!
    You brought good times back to Jacob!
You lifted the cloud of guilt from your people,
    you put their sins far out of sight.
You took back your sin-provoked threats,
    you cooled your hot, righteous anger.

^4-7 Help us again, God of our help;
    don’t hold a grudge against us forever.
You aren’t going to keep this up, are you?
    scowling and angry, year after year?
Why not help us make a fresh start—a resurrection life?
    Then your people will laugh and sing!
Show us how much you love us, God!
    Give us the salvation we need!

^8-9 I can’t wait to hear what he’ll say.
    God’s about to pronounce his people well,
The holy people he loves so much,
    so they’ll never again live like fools.
See how close his salvation is to those who fear him?
    Our country is home base for Glory!

^10-13 Love and Truth meet in the street,
    Right Living and Whole Living embrace and kiss!
Truth sprouts green from the ground,
    Right Living pours down from the skies!
Oh yes! God gives Goodness and Beauty;
    our land responds with Bounty and Blessing.
Right Living strides out before him,
    and clears a path for his passage.

86 ^1-7 Bend an ear, God; answer me.
    I’m one miserable wretch!
Keep me safe—haven’t I lived a good life?
    Help your servant—I’m depending on you!
You’re my God; have mercy on me.
    I count on you from morning to night.
Give your servant a happy life;
    I put myself in your hands!
You’re well-known as good and forgiving,
    bighearted to all who ask for help.
Pay attention, God, to my prayer;
    bend down and listen to my cry for help.
Every time I’m in trouble I call on you,
    confident that you’ll answer.

^8-10 There’s no one quite like you among the gods, O Lord,
    and nothing to compare with your works.
All the nations you made are on their way,
    ready to give honor to you, O Lord,
Ready to put your beauty on display,
    parading your greatness,
And the great things you do—
    God, you’re the one, there’s no one but you!

^11-17 Train me, God, to walk straight;
    then I’ll follow your true path.
Put me together, one heart and mind;
    then, undivided, I’ll worship in joyful fear.
From the bottom of my heart I thank you, dear Lord;
    I’ve never kept secret what you’re up to.
You’ve always been great toward me—what love!
    You snatched me from the brink of disaster!
God, these bullies have reared their heads!
    A gang of thugs is after me—
    and they don’t care a thing about you.
But you, O God, are both tender and kind,
    not easily angered, immense in love,
    and you never, never quit.
So look me in the eye and show kindness,
    give your servant the strength to go on,
    save your dear, dear child!
Make a show of how much you love me
    so the bullies who hate me will stand there slack-jawed,
As you, God, gently and powerfully
    put me back on my feet.

Hebrew Bible

Genesis 46:1-7, 28-34 – The Message

So Israel set out on the journey with everything he owned. He arrived at Beersheba and worshiped, offering sacrifices to the God of his father Isaac.

² God spoke to Israel in a vision that night: “Jacob! Jacob!”
“Yes?” he said. “I’m listening.”
^3-4 God said, “I am the God of your father. Don’t be afraid of going down to Egypt. I’m going to make you a great nation there. I’ll go with you down to Egypt; I’ll also bring you back here. And when you die, Joseph will be with you; with his own hand he’ll close your eyes.”
^5-7 Then Jacob left Beersheba. Israel’s sons loaded their father and their little ones and their wives on the wagons Pharaoh had sent to carry him. They arrived in Egypt with the livestock and the wealth they had accumulated in Canaan. Jacob brought everyone in his family with him—sons and grandsons, daughters and granddaughters. Everyone.
⁸ These are the names of the Israelites, Jacob and his descendants, who went to Egypt:
Reuben, Jacob’s firstborn.
⁹ Reuben’s sons: Hanoch, Pallu, Hezron, and Carmi.
¹⁰ Simeon’s sons: Jemuel, Jamin, Ohad, Jakin, Zohar, and Shaul the son of a Canaanite woman.
¹¹ Levi’s sons: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.
¹² Judah’s sons: Er, Onan, Shelah, Perez, and Zerah (Er and Onan had already died in the land of Canaan). The sons of Perez were Hezron and Hamul.
¹³ Issachar’s sons: Tola, Puah, Jashub, and Shimron.
¹⁴ Zebulun’s sons: Sered, Elon, and Jahleel.
¹⁵ These are the sons that Leah bore to Jacob in Paddan Aram. There was also his daughter Dinah. Altogether, sons and daughters, they numbered thirty-three.
¹⁶ Gad’s sons: Zephon, Haggi, Shuni, Ezbon, Eri, Arodi, and Areli.
¹⁷ Asher’s sons: Imnah, Ishvah, Ishvi, and Beriah. Also their sister Serah, and Beriah’s sons, Heber and Malkiel.
¹⁸ These are the children that Zilpah, the maid that Laban gave to his daughter Leah, bore to Jacob—sixteen of them.
^19-21 The sons of Jacob’s wife Rachel were Joseph and Benjamin. Joseph was the father of two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim, from his marriage to Asenath daughter of Potiphera, priest of On. They were born to him in Egypt. Benjamin’s sons were Bela, Beker, Ashbel, Gera, Naaman, Ehi, Rosh, Muppim, Huppim, and Ard.
²² These are the children born to Jacob through Rachel—fourteen.
²³ Dan’s son: Hushim.
²⁴ Naphtali’s sons: Jahziel, Guni, Jezer, and Shillem.
²⁵ These are the children born to Jacob through Bilhah, the maid Laban had given to his daughter Rachel—seven.
^26-27 Summing up, all those who went down to Egypt with Jacob—his own children, not counting his sons’ wives—numbered sixty-six. Counting in the two sons born to Joseph in Egypt, the members of Jacob’s family who ended up in Egypt numbered seventy.

^28-29 Jacob sent Judah on ahead to get directions to Goshen from Joseph. When they got to Goshen, Joseph gave orders for his chariot and went to Goshen to meet his father Israel. The moment Joseph saw him, he threw himself on his neck and wept. He wept a long time.

³⁰ Israel said to Joseph, “I’m ready to die. I’ve looked into your face—you are indeed alive.”
^31-34 Joseph then spoke to his brothers and his father’s family. “I’ll go and tell Pharaoh, ‘My brothers and my father’s family, all of whom lived in Canaan, have come to me. The men are shepherds; they’ve always made their living by raising livestock. And they’ve brought their flocks and herds with them, along with everything else they own.’ When Pharaoh calls you in and asks what kind of work you do, tell him, ‘Your servants have always kept livestock for as long as we can remember—we and our parents also.’ That way he’ll let you stay apart in the area of Goshen—for Egyptians look down on anyone who is a shepherd.”

Epistle

1 Corinthians 9:1-15 – The Message

^1-2 And don’t tell me that I have no authority to write like this. I’m perfectly free to do this—isn’t that obvious? Haven’t I been given a job to do? Wasn’t I commissioned to this work in a face-to-face meeting with Jesus, our Master? Aren’t you yourselves proof of the good work that I’ve done for the Master? Even if no one else admits the authority of my commission, you can’t deny it. Why, my work with you is living proof of my authority!

^3-7 I’m not shy in standing up to my critics. We who are on missionary assignments for God have a right to decent accommodations, and we have a right to support for us and our families. You don’t seem to have raised questions with the other apostles and our Master’s brothers and Peter in these matters. So, why me? Is it just Barnabas and I who have to go it alone and pay our own way? Are soldiers self-employed? Are gardeners forbidden to eat vegetables from their own gardens? Don’t milkmaids get to drink their fill from the pail?

^8-12 I’m not just sounding off because I’m irritated. This is all written in the scriptural law. Moses wrote, “Don’t muzzle an ox to keep it from eating the grain when it’s threshing.” Do you think Moses’ primary concern was the care of farm animals? Don’t you think his concern extends to us? Of course. Farmers plow and thresh expecting something when the crop comes in. So if we have planted spiritual seed among you, is it out of line to expect a meal or two from you? Others demand plenty from you in these ways. Don’t we who have never demanded deserve even more?

^12-14 But we’re not going to start demanding now what we’ve always had a perfect right to. Our decision all along has been to put up with anything rather than to get in the way or detract from the Message of Christ. All I’m concerned with right now is that you not use our decision to take advantage of others, depriving them of what is rightly theirs. You know, don’t you, that it’s always been taken for granted that those who work in the Temple live off the proceeds of the Temple, and that those who offer sacrifices at the altar eat their meals from what has been sacrificed? Along the same lines, the Master directed that those who spread the Message be supported by those who believe the Message.

^15-18 Still, I want it made clear that I’ve never gotten anything out of this for myself, and that I’m not writing now to get something. I’d rather die than give anyone ammunition to discredit me or impugn my motives. If I proclaim the Message, it’s not to get something out of it for myself. I’m compelled to do it, and doomed if I don’t! If this was my own idea of just another way to make a living, I’d expect some pay. But since it’s not my idea but something solemnly entrusted to me, why would I expect to get paid? So am I getting anything out of it? Yes, as a matter of fact: the pleasure of proclaiming the Message at no cost to you. You don’t even have to pay my expenses!

³ Вот мой ответ тем, кто меня осуждает. ⁴ Разве мы не имеем права получать пищу и питье? ⁵ Разве мы не имеем права брать верующую^[a] жену с собой, как другие апостолы, например, братья Господа и Кифа? ⁶ Или же это только Варнава и я должны сами зарабатывать себе на пропитание? ⁷ Какой солдат сам оплачивает связанные с воинской службой расходы? Кто, насадив виноградник, потом не ест виноград из него? Кто пасет стадо и не пьет молока от него? ⁸ Разве я говорю все это, смотря на вещи только с человеческой точки зрения? Разве Закон говорит не о том же? ⁹ Ведь в Законе Моисея написано: «Не закрывай рта молотящему волу»^[b]. Разве только о волах переживает Бог? ¹⁰ Конечно же, Он говорит это и о нас! Для нас написано: «Пахарь должен пахать, и молотильщик молотить с надеждой на то, что каждый получит свою часть урожая». ¹¹ Если мы посеяли среди вас духовное семя, то разве это будет слишком, если мы пожнем у вас материальный урожай? ¹² Если другие имеют право на вашу поддержку, то тем более мы.
Мы, однако, не пользовались этим правом, мы готовы все переносить ради того, чтобы Радостная Весть Христа беспрепятственно распространялась. ¹³ Разве вы не знаете: кто служит в храме, получает в храме и пропитание, и кто служит у жертвенника, имеет право и на долю от того, что приносится в жертву? ¹⁴ Господь также дал установление, чтобы те, кто возвещает Радостную Весть, получали за это свое пропитание. ¹⁵ Но я не воспользовался ничем подобным, да и теперь я пишу это не для того, чтобы вы оказывали мне такую поддержку. Да я готов скорее умереть! Никто не может лишить меня права хвалиться этим.

Mark 6:30-46 – The Message

Supper for Five Thousand

^30-31 The apostles then rendezvoused with Jesus and reported on all that they had done and taught. Jesus said, “Come off by yourselves; let’s take a break and get a little rest.” For there was constant coming and going. They didn’t even have time to eat.

^32-34 So they got in the boat and went off to a remote place by themselves. Someone saw them going and the word got around. From the surrounding towns people went out on foot, running, and got there ahead of them. When Jesus arrived, he saw this huge crowd. At the sight of them, his heart broke—like sheep with no shepherd they were. He went right to work teaching them.
^35-36 When his disciples thought this had gone on long enough—it was now quite late in the day—they interrupted: “We are a long way out in the country, and it’s very late. Pronounce a benediction and send these folks off so they can get some supper.”
³⁷ Jesus said, “You do it. Fix supper for them.”
They replied, “Are you serious? You want us to go spend a fortune on food for their supper?”
³⁸ But he was quite serious. “How many loaves of bread do you have? Take an inventory.”
That didn’t take long. “Five,” they said, “plus two fish.”
^39-44 Jesus got them all to sit down in groups of fifty or a hundred—they looked like a patchwork quilt of wildflowers spread out on the green grass! He took the five loaves and two fish, lifted his face to heaven in prayer, blessed, broke, and gave the bread to the disciples, and the disciples in turn gave it to the people. He did the same with the fish. They all ate their fill. The disciples gathered twelve baskets of leftovers. More than five thousand were at the supper.

Walking on the Sea

^45-46 As soon as the meal was finished, Jesus insisted that the disciples get in the boat and go on ahead across to Bethsaida while he dismissed the congregation. After sending them off, he climbed a mountain to pray.

Иисус насыщает пять тысяч человек

(Мат. 14:13-21; Лк. 9:10-17; Ин. 6:1-13)

³⁰ Апостолы возвратились к Иисусу и рассказали Ему обо всем, что они делали и чему учили народ. ³¹ Иисус сказал им:
– Отправляйтесь в безлюдное место и немного отдохните, – ведь все время приходило и уходило много народа, и у них даже не было времени поесть. ³² И они отправились на лодке в пустынное место. ³³ Но люди видели, как они отплыли, причем многие их узнали и устремились туда посуху из всех городов, так что оказались на месте даже раньше лодки.
³⁴ Когда Иисус сошел на берег и увидел большую толпу, Он сжалился над людьми, потому что они были как овцы без пастуха^[a], и начал их учить многим вещам.
³⁵ Уже поздно вечером ученики подошли к Нему и сказали:
– Место здесь пустынное, и уже поздно. ³⁶ Отпусти народ, пусть пойдут в окрестные деревни и селения и купят себе поесть.
³⁷ Но Иисус ответил:
– Вы дайте им есть.
Ученики удивились:
– Неужели Ты хочешь, чтобы мы купили еды динариев^[b] на двести и накормили этих людей?
³⁸ – Сколько у вас хлеба? – спросил Иисус. – Пойдите посмотрите.
Они пошли, узнали и ответили:
– Пять хлебов и две рыбы.
³⁹ Иисус велел рассадить народ группами на зеленой траве. ⁴⁰ Люди возлегли, расположившись группами по сто и по пятьдесят человек. ⁴¹ Иисус взял пять хлебов и две рыбы и, подняв глаза к небу, благословил пищу. Затем Он стал разламывать хлеб и давать Своим ученикам, чтобы те раздавали народу, и две рыбы тоже разделил на всех. ⁴² Все ели и насытились, ⁴³ и собрали еще двенадцать полных корзин остатков хлеба и рыбы. ⁴⁴ Одних только мужчин ело около пяти тысяч.

Иисус идет по воде

⁴⁵ Сразу после этого Иисус велел Своим ученикам сесть в лодку и переправиться на другую сторону озера, к Вифсаиде, а Сам Он оставался, пока не отпустил народ. ⁴⁶ Простившись с народом, Иисус поднялся на гору помолиться.
