45 My heart overflows with a goodly theme;
    I address my verses to the king;
    my tongue is like the pen of a ready scribe.

² You are the fairest of the sons of men;
    grace is poured upon your lips;
    therefore God has blessed you for ever.
³ Gird your sword upon your thigh, O mighty one,
    in your glory and majesty!

⁴ In your majesty ride forth victoriously
    for the cause of truth and to defend^[a] the right;
    let your right hand teach you dread deeds!
⁵ Your arrows are sharp
    in the heart of the king’s enemies;
    the peoples fall under you.

⁶ Your divine throne^[b] endures for ever and ever.
    Your royal scepter is a scepter of equity;
⁷     you love righteousness and hate wickedness.
Therefore God, your God, has anointed you
    with the oil of gladness above your fellows;
⁸     your robes are all fragrant with myrrh and aloes and cassia.
From ivory palaces stringed instruments make you glad;
⁹     daughters of kings are among your ladies of honor;
    at your right hand stands the queen in gold of Ophir.

¹⁰ Hear, O daughter, consider, and incline your ear;
    forget your people and your father’s house;
¹¹     and the king will desire your beauty.
Since he is your lord, bow to him;
¹²     the people^[c] of Tyre will sue your favor with gifts,
    the richest of the people ¹³ with all kinds of wealth.

The princess is decked in her chamber with gold-woven robes;^[d]
14     in many-colored robes she is led to the king,
    with her virgin companions, her escort,^[e] in her train.
¹⁵ With joy and gladness they are led along
    as they enter the palace of the king.

¹⁶ Instead of your fathers shall be your sons;
    you will make them princes in all the earth.
¹⁷ I will cause your name to be celebrated in all generations;
    therefore the peoples will praise you for ever and ever.

God’s Covenant with David

I will sing of thy steadfast love, O Lord,^[a] for ever;
    with my mouth I will proclaim thy faithfulness to all generations.
² For thy steadfast love was established for ever,
    thy faithfulness is firm as the heavens.
³ Thou hast said, “I have made a covenant with my chosen one,
    I have sworn to David my servant:
⁴ ‘I will establish your descendants for ever,
    and build your throne for all generations.’”Selah

⁵ Let the heavens praise thy wonders, O Lord,
    thy faithfulness in the assembly of the holy ones!
⁶ For who in the skies can be compared to the Lord?
    Who among the heavenly beings^[b] is like the Lord,
⁷ a God feared in the council of the holy ones,
    great and terrible^[c] above all that are round about him?
 

⁸ O Lord God of hosts,
    who is mighty as thou art, O Lord,
    with thy faithfulness round about thee?
⁹ Thou dost rule the raging of the sea;
    when its waves rise, thou stillest them.
¹⁰ Thou didst crush Rahab like a carcass,
    thou didst scatter thy enemies with thy mighty arm.

    to thy faithful one, and say:
“I have set the crown^[e] upon one who is mighty,
    I have exalted one chosen from the people.
²⁰ I have found David, my servant;
    with my holy oil I have anointed him;
²¹ so that my hand shall ever abide with him,
    my arm also shall strengthen him.
²² The enemy shall not outwit him,
    the wicked shall not humble him.
²³ I will crush his foes before him
    and strike down those who hate him.
²⁴ My faithfulness and my steadfast love shall be with him,

The Siege of Jerusalem

Ho Ariel, Ariel,
the city where David encamped!
Add year to year;
    let the feasts run their round.
² Yet I will distress Ariel,
    and there shall be moaning and lamentation,
    and she shall be to me like an Ariel.
³ And I will encamp against you round about,
    and will besiege you with towers
    and I will raise siegeworks against you.
⁴ Then deep from the earth you shall speak,
    from low in the dust your words shall come;
your voice shall come from the ground like the voice of a ghost,
    and your speech shall whisper out of the dust.

⁵ But the multitude of your foes^[a] shall be like small dust,
    and the multitude of the ruthless like passing chaff.
And in an instant, suddenly,
⁶     you will be visited by the Lord of hosts
with thunder and with earthquake and great noise,
    with whirlwind and tempest, and the flame of a devouring fire.
⁷ And the multitude of all the nations that fight against Ariel,
    all that fight against her and her stronghold and distress her,
    shall be like a dream, a vision of the night.
 

⁸ As when a hungry man dreams he is eating
    and awakes with his hunger not satisfied,
or as when a thirsty man dreams he is drinking
    and awakes faint, with his thirst not quenched,
so shall the multitude of all the nations be
    that fight against Mount Zion.

⁹ Stupefy yourselves and be in a stupor,
    blind yourselves and be blind!
Be drunk, but not with wine;
    stagger, but not with strong drink!
¹⁰ For the Lord has poured out upon you
    a spirit of deep sleep,
and has closed your eyes, the prophets,
    and covered your heads, the seers.

¹¹ And the vision of all this has become to you like the words of a book that is sealed. When men give it to one who can read, saying, “Read this,” he says, “I cannot, for it is sealed.” ¹² And when they give the book to one who cannot read, saying, “Read this,” he says, “I cannot read.”

¹³ And the Lord said:
“Because this people draw near with their mouth
    and honor me with their lips,
    while their hearts are far from me,
and their fear of me is a commandment of men learned by rote;
¹⁴ therefore, behold, I will again
    do marvelous things with this people,
    wonderful and marvelous;
and the wisdom of their wise men shall perish,
    and the discernment of their discerning men shall be hid.”

¹⁵ Woe to those who hide deep from the Lord their counsel,
    whose deeds are in the dark,
    and who say, “Who sees us? Who knows us?”

⁷ С ордами всех народов, воюющих с Ариилом,
    нападающих на него, на его крепость,

⁸ Как снится голодному, что он ест,

и как снится жаждущему, что он пьет,

    Он сомкнул вам глаза, пророки;

¹¹ Все это видение для вас – не более, чем слова в запечатанном свитке. Если вы дадите свиток тому, кто умеет читать, и скажете: «Пожалуйста, прочти его», – он ответит: «Не могу, ведь он запечатан». ¹² А если вы дадите свиток тому, кто читать не умеет, и скажете: «Пожалуйста, прочти это!» – он ответит: «Я не умею читать».

¹³ Владыка говорит:

– Этот народ приближается ко Мне устами,
    чтит Меня губами,
но сердца их далеки от Меня,
    и их поклонение Мне –
    лишь заученное человеческое предписание.
¹⁴ Поэтому Я опять совершу с этим народом
    необыкновенные дела,
необыкновенные и поразительные.
    Мудрость его мудрецов погибнет,
разум разумных исчезнет.

    “He has no understanding”?

Hope for the Future

¹⁷ Is it not yet a very little while
    until Lebanon shall be turned into a fruitful field,
    and the fruitful field shall be regarded as a forest?
¹⁸ In that day the deaf shall hear
    the words of a book,
and out of their gloom and darkness
    the eyes of the blind shall see.
¹⁹ The meek shall obtain fresh joy in the Lord,
    and the poor among men shall exult in the Holy One of Israel.
²⁰ For the ruthless shall come to nought and the scoffer cease,
    and all who watch to do evil shall be cut off,

Now before faith came, we were confined under the law, kept under restraint until faith should be revealed. ²⁴ So that the law was our custodian until Christ came, that we might be justified by faith. ²⁵ But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a custodian; ²⁶ for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith. ²⁷ For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. ²⁸ There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. ²⁹ And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to promise.

4 I mean that the heir, as long as he is a child, is no better than a slave, though he is the owner of all the estate; ² but he is under guardians and trustees until the date set by the father. ³ So with us; when we were children, we were slaves to the elemental spirits of the universe. ⁴ But when the time had fully come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, ⁵ to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. ⁶ And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! ²⁶ In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, ²⁷ to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary. ²⁸ And he came to her and said, “Hail, O favored one, the Lord is with you!”^{[a] 29} But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and considered in her mind what sort of greeting this might be. ³⁰ And the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. ³¹ And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus.

³² He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High;
and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David,
³³ and he will reign over the house of Jacob for ever;
and of his kingdom there will be no end.”

³⁴ And Mary said to the angel, “How shall this be, since I have no husband?” ³⁵ And the angel said to her,

and the rich he has sent empty away.
⁵⁴ He has helped his servant Israel,
in remembrance of his mercy,
⁵⁵ as he spoke to our fathers,
to Abraham and to his posterity for ever.”

⁵⁶ And Mary remained with her about three months, and returned to her home.

The Birth of John the Baptist

⁵⁷ Now the time came for Elizabeth to be delivered, and she gave birth to a son. ⁵⁸ And her neighbors and kinsfolk heard that the Lord had shown great mercy to her, and they rejoiced with her. ⁵⁹ And on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child; and they would have named him Zechari′ah after his father, ⁶⁰ but his mother said, “Not so; he shall be called John.” ⁶¹ And they said to her, “None of your kindred is called by this name.” ⁶² And they made signs to his father, inquiring what he would have him called. ⁶³ And he asked for a writing tablet, and wrote, “His name is John.” And they all marveled. ⁶⁴ And immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue loosed, and he spoke, blessing God. ⁶⁵ And fear came on all their neighbors. And all these things were talked about through all the hill country of Judea; ⁶⁶ and all who heard them laid them up in their hearts, saying, “What then will this child be?” For the hand of the Lord was with him.

Zechariah’s Prophecy

⁶⁷ And his father Zechari′ah was filled with the Holy Spirit, and prophesied, saying,

⁶⁸ “Blessed be the Lord God of Israel,
for he has visited and redeemed his people,
⁶⁹ and has raised up a horn of salvation for us
in the house of his servant David,
⁷⁰ as he spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets from of old,
⁷¹ that we should be saved from our enemies,
and from the hand of all who hate us;
⁷² to perform the mercy promised to our fathers,
and to remember his holy covenant,
⁷³ the oath which he swore to our father Abraham, ⁷⁴ to grant us
that we, being delivered from the hand of our enemies,
might serve him without fear,
⁷⁵ in holiness and righteousness before him all the days of our life.
⁷⁶ And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High;
for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways,
⁷⁷ to give knowledge of salvation to his people
in the forgiveness of their sins,
⁷⁸ through the tender mercy of our God,
when the day shall dawn upon^[d] us from on high
⁷⁹ to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death,
to guide our feet into the way of peace.”

⁸⁰ And the child grew and became strong in spirit, and he was in the wilderness till the day of his manifestation to Israel.

– Не бойся, Мария, потому что Бог проявил к тебе милость! ³¹ Ты забеременеешь и родишь Сына, и назовешь Его Иисусом^[b]. ³² Он станет великим, и Его будут называть Сыном Всевышнего. Господь Бог даст Ему престол Его предка Давида, ³³ и Он будет царствовать над домом Иакова вовеки, и Его Царству не будет конца.

³⁴ – Как это может быть? – спросила Мария. – Ведь я еще не была с мужчиной.

³⁵ Ангел ответил:

– Святой Дух сойдет на тебя, и тебя осенит сила Всевышнего. Мария навещает Елисавету

Пророческое слово Захарии

⁶⁷ Святой Дух наполнил Захарию, отца Иоанна, и он начал пророчествовать:

⁶⁸ – Благословен Господь, Бог Израиля^[g],
    Который посетил Свой народ и искупил его!
⁶⁹ Он воздвиг нам рог спасения^[h]
    из дома Своего слуги Давида,
⁷⁰ как Он издавна обещал через Своих святых пророков,
⁷¹ что Он спасет нас от врагов
    и от рук тех, кто ненавидит нас.
⁷² Так Он проявил милость к нашим предкам,
    помня Свой святой завет,

⁷⁴ избавить нас от рук наших врагов,

¹⁸ Now the birth of Jesus Christ^[a] took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child of the Holy Spirit; ¹⁹ and her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. ²⁰ But as he considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit; ²¹ she will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” ²² All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet:

²³ “Behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear a son,
and his name shall be called Emman′u-el”

(which means, God with us). ²⁴ When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him; he took his wife, ²⁵ but knew her not until she had borne a son; and he called his name Jesus.
