A song of David. For the dedication of the temple.
1 I praise You, Eternal One. You lifted me out of that deep, dark pit
and denied my opponents the pleasure of rubbing in their success.
2 Eternal One, my True God, I cried out to You for help;
You mended the shattered pieces of my life.
3 You lifted me from the grave with a mighty hand,
gave me another chance,
and saved me from joining those in that dreadful pit.
4 Sing, all you who remain faithful!
Pour out your hearts to the Eternal with praise and melodies;
let grateful music fill the air and bless His name.
5 His wrath, you see, is fleeting,
but His grace lasts a lifetime.

Psalm 32 -- The Voice
A contemplative song[a] of David.
The
psalms celebrate God’s forgiveness that comes through confession and
repentance. Some interpreters link this psalm to David’s sin with Bathsheba
after Nathan had exposed his transgression, but the king certainly had other
failings. Even if we do not associate this psalm with any personal
transgression by David, it serves well as a model confession for those who are
painfully aware of their sin.

Psalm 42 -- The Voice
Book Two
This
second book of psalms (Psalms 42–72) has a few unique
features. First, it is the only book of the five that contains psalms ascribed
to the sons of Korah, a group of Levite temple singers. Second, it uses two
rather obscure Hebrew terms in the superscriptions of almost half of these
psalms. Maskil, which may be related to contemplation, is translated
“contemplative poem” or “song” (42; 44–45; 52–55) and miktam, whose meaning is
unclear, is translated “a prayer” (56–60). Third, in referring to God this second
book shows a preference for the word “God” over the name “the Eternal One” that
appears as “YHWH” in the Hebrew Scriptures.
Throughout the Bible,
the creator and covenant God is referred to in many ways. Generally speaking,
the names and titles used indicate something of His character and nature. The
title “God” implies His unique majesty and power; no one is like Him. The name,
translated “The Eternal One” and also “The Eternal,” is God’s covenant name
revealed uniquely to Israel. As the translation suggests, the divine name
implies that the one True God transcends time and yet He is “with” His people.Psalm 42[a]

Haggai 2:1-19 -- The Voice
On the 21st day of the 7th month, the prophet Haggai gave another message from the Eternal.
Eternal
One:
2 Ask Zerubbabel (Shealtiel’s son and Judah’s governor), Joshua
(Jehozadak’s son and the high priest), and all those who returned from
exile, 3 “Are any of you still living who saw how glorious
My first house was before it was destroyed more than 60 years ago?
How does this current one look to you now? In comparison to the
first, does this one look like nothing? Of course it does.
4 “But don’t be
discouraged. Be strong, Zerubbabel. Be strong, Joshua (Jehozadak’s son and
the high priest). Be strong, all you who once again live in the land.
Keep working on it. For I, the Eternal, Commander of heavenly
armies, am with you! 5 Regarding the covenant[a] I made with you when
your ancestors came out of Egypt,[b] My Spirit remains with you, living among
you. Do not be afraid.
6 “Yet once more[c] I will shake not only
the earth, but also the heavens,[d] the sea, and the land. 7 I
will rattle all the nations, and all that is valuable in the eyes of the
world will be willingly brought to My house. I will see to it that it is
filled to the brim with My glory.
8 “You see, all
the silver and all the gold in this world already belong to Me. 9 You
will stand by and watch as the magnificence of this new house will eclipse
the magnificence of My first house. And in this new house, I will give you
peace.”
God
proclaims peace will come upon the Jews, a peace not only for Israel but for
all believers in the Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6–7).
So
says the Eternal, Commander of heavenly armies.
10 On the 24th day of the
9th month during the 2nd year of King Darius’ reign, the prophet Haggai
received a third message from the Eternal One. 11 The
Eternal, Commander of heavenly armies, told Haggai to ask the
priests to explain what the law says about this scenario:
Haggai: 12 If
a person is carrying sacred meat, the meat of the sacrifices, in the
fold of his garment and that garment comes into contact with some ordinary
bread, stew, wine, oil, or any other food; then does it transfer its sacredness
to the new food?
Priests: No.
Haggai: 13 What
about this situation then? If a person who is ritually impure from touching
a dead body[e] touches one of these
foods, does he transfer the impurity to it?
Priests: Yes, it is now impure.
Haggai: 14 The
Eternal One says this is what He sees when He looks over this people and this
nation:
“Everything
they have done and everything they have brought there as a spiritual
offering is impure. 15 Now think carefully about your
choices from this point forward. Consider how things were before you even
laid the first stone back upon the other to rebuild the house of the Eternal
One. 16 How did it turn out for you? Were you able to do it without
Me? You came to scoop grain and expected 20 measures, but there were
only 10. You came to draw wine from a vat and expected 50 measures, but there
were only 20. 17 I crushed you and everything you tried to do under
your own power with scorching heat, mildew, and hail; and still you
didn’t turn to Me.[f]
18 “From this day
forward—from the 24th day of the 9th month, from the foundation of the Eternal
One’s house—think carefully and ask yourself, 19 ‘Is
there seed left unplanted in the storage barns?’ No. But you
must be patient. The grape vine and the fig tree, the pomegranate
trees and the olive trees have not borne fruit yet. From this day on, I will
bless you.”

3:1-16 -- The Voice
For
centuries many Jews had been scattered throughout the known world, exiled to
the lands east of the Jordan River from the promised land by powerful invading
nations. After Jerusalem fell in a.d. 70, even more Jews
left Judea, this time crossing the Mediterranean looking for some place far
from Roman cruelty. That’s why, as John writes these letters to churches in
Asia Minor, he recalls some of the most infamous characters from Israel’s
past—Balaam, Balak, and Jezebel. The ordeals facing John’s churches are not all
that different from those Israel faced hundreds of years before. Many of the
same struggles plague churches in the West to this day. The names may change,
but the problems confronting God’s faithful do not.
Letter to Sardis
3 The One: Write down My
words, and send them to the messenger of the church in Sardis. “These are
the words of the One who has the seven Spirits of God, the Perfect Spirit,
and the One who holds the seven stars:
“I
know the things you do—you’ve claimed a reputation of life, but you are
actually dead. 2 Wake up from your death-sleep, and
strengthen what remains of the life you have been given that is in
danger of death. I have judged your deeds as far from complete in the sight of
My God. 3 Therefore, remember what you have received and heard;
it’s time to keep these instructions and turn back from your ways.[a] If you do not wake up from this sleep, I
will come in judgment. I will creep up on you like a thief—you will have no
way of knowing when I will come. 4 But there are a few in
Sardis who don’t have the stain of evil works on their clothes. They
will walk alongside Me in white, spotless garments because they have
been proven worthy.
5 “The one who conquers through
faithfulness even unto death will be clothed in white garments, and I will certainly
not erase that person’s name from the book of life. I will acknowledge this
person’s name before My Father and before His heavenly messengers.
6 “Let the person who is
able to hear, listen to and follow what the Spirit proclaims to all the
churches.”
Letter to Philadelphia
7 Write down My words,
and send them to the messenger of the church in Philadelphia. “These are
the words of the holy One, the true One, and the One who possesses the key of
David, which opens the possibilities so that no one can shut them. The
One who closes all options so that no one can open:
8 “I know your deeds.
See, I have placed before you an open door, which no one can shut. I have
done this because you have limited strength, yet you have obeyed My word
and have not denied My name. 9 Watch, and I will make those of
the congregation of Satan—those who call themselves ‘Jews’ but are not because
they lie—come before you penitent, falling at your feet. Then they will know
how much I have loved you. 10 Because you have obeyed My
instructions to endure and be patient, I will protect you from the time of
trial which will come upon the whole earth and put everyone in it to the test. 11 I
will soon return. Hold tight to what you have so that no one can take away your
victor’s wreath.
12 “As for the one who
conquers through faithfulness even unto death, I will plant that person
as a pillar in the temple of My God, and that person will never have to leave the
presence of God. Moreover, I will inscribe this person with the name
of My God and the name of the city of My God, New Jerusalem—which descends out
of heaven from My God—and My own new name.
God’s
intention for the world is this: “I will be your God, and you will be my
people.” This is fulfilled by those who are faithful to Him.
13 “Let the person who is
able to hear, listen to and follow what the Spirit proclaims to all the
churches.”
Letter to Laodicea
14 Write down My words,
and send them to the messenger of the church in Laodicea. “These are the
words of the Amen, the Faithful and True Witness, the Beginning of God’s creation:
15 “I know your works. You
are neither cold with apathy nor hot with passion. It would be
better if you were one or the other, but you are neither. 16 So
because you are lukewarm, neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My
mouth.

Matthew 24:1-14 -- The Voice
Jesus left the temple. As He was walking away, His disciples came up to Him and asked what He thought about the temple buildings.
Jesus: 2 Look
around you. All of it will become rubble. I tell you this: not one stone will
be left standing.
3 Later, as Jesus was sitting
on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately.
Disciples: We don’t understand
Your predictions. Tell us, when will these things happen: When will the
temple be destroyed? What will be the sign that You are returning? How will
we know that the end of the age is upon us?
In
this, the last of the five major sermons, Jesus focuses on prophetic and
apocalyptic themes of judgment and the end times. The disciples have been
listening to the prophetic judgment Jesus has issued on the religious leaders.
They have images of collapsing temple buildings, of prophets pursued from town
to town, of floggings, and of blood-soaked garments. They can imagine
themselves blood-soaked. When will this all happen, and what does it mean?
Jesus: 4 Take
care that you are not deceived. 5 For many will come in My name
claiming they are the Anointed One, and many poor souls will be taken in. 6 You
will hear of wars, and you will hear rumors of wars, but you should not panic.
It is inevitable, this violent breaking apart of the sinful world, but
remember, the wars are not the end. The end is still unfolding. 7 Nations
will do battle with nations, and kingdoms will fight neighboring kingdoms, and
there will be famines and earthquakes. 8 But these are not
the end. These are the birth pangs, the beginning. The end is still
unfolding.
9 They will hand you over
to your enemies, who will torture you and then kill you, and you will be hated
by all nations because of Me. 10 And many who have followed
Me and claimed to love Me and sought God’s kingdom will turn away—they
will abandon the faith and betray and hate one another. 11-12 The
love that they had for one another will grow cold because few will obey the
law. False prophets will appear, many will be taken in by them, and the only
thing that will grow is wickedness. There will be no end to the increase of
wickedness. 13 But those who do not waver from our path and
do not follow those false prophets—those among you will be saved. 14 And
this good news of God’s kingdom will be preached throughout the whole world, a
testimony to all people and all nations. Then, beloved, the end, the
consummation of all things, will come.
