Psalm 85 – The Message

A Korah Psalm

^1-3 God, you smiled on your good earth!
    You brought good times back to Jacob!
You lifted the cloud of guilt from your people,
    you put their sins far out of sight.
You took back your sin-provoked threats,
    you cooled your hot, righteous anger.

^4-7 Help us again, God of our help;
    don’t hold a grudge against us forever.
You aren’t going to keep this up, are you?
    scowling and angry, year after year?
Why not help us make a fresh start—a resurrection life?
    Then your people will laugh and sing!
Show us how much you love us, God!
    Give us the salvation we need!

^8-9 I can’t wait to hear what he’ll say.
    God’s about to pronounce his people well,
The holy people he loves so much,
    so they’ll never again live like fools.
See how close his salvation is to those who fear him?
    Our country is home base for Glory!

^10-13 Love and Truth meet in the street,
    Right Living and Whole Living embrace and kiss!
Truth sprouts green from the ground,
    Right Living pours down from the skies!
Oh yes! God gives Goodness and Beauty;
    our land responds with Bounty and Blessing.
Right Living strides out before him,
    and clears a path for his passage

⁷ В день беды моей я к Тебе взываю,

^1-3 He founded Zion on the Holy Mountain—
    and oh, how God loves his home!
Loves it far better than all
    the homes of Jacob put together!
God’s hometown—oh!
    everyone there is talking about you!

⁴ I name them off, those among whom I’m famous:
    Egypt and Babylon,
    also Philistia,
    even Tyre, along with Cush.
Word’s getting around; they point them out:
    “This one was born again here!”

⁵ The word’s getting out on Zion:
    “Men and women, right and left,
    get born again in her!”

⁶ God registers their names in his book:
    “This one, this one, and this one—
    born again, right here.”

⁷ Singers and dancers give credit to Zion:
    “All my springs are in you!”

² Господи, Бог спасения моего,
    днем и ночью взываю к Тебе.
 

³ Пусть достигнет Тебя молитва моя,
    услышь мою мольбу.

⁴ Насытилась душа моя страданий,
    и жизнь моя приблизилась к миру мертвых.
 

⁵ Я стал как те, кто спускается в пропасть,
    как потерявший силу человек.
 

⁶ Я брошен между мертвыми;
    я подобен убитым, лежащим в могиле,
о которых Ты уже не вспоминаешь
    и которые от Твоей руки отторгнуты.
 

⁷ Ты положил меня в глубокую пропасть,
    в темную бездну.
 

⁸ Тяжестью лежит на мне Твой гнев;

An Ethan Prayer

^1-4 Your love, God, is my song, and I’ll sing it!
    I’m forever telling everyone how faithful you are.
I’ll never quit telling the story of your love—
    how you built the cosmos
    and guaranteed everything in it.
Your love has always been our lives’ foundation,
    your fidelity has been the roof over our world.
You once said, “I joined forces with my chosen leader,
    I pledged my word to my servant, David, saying,
‘Everyone descending from you is guaranteed life;
    I’ll make your rule as solid and lasting as rock.’”

^5-18 God! Let the cosmos praise your wonderful ways,
    the choir of holy angels sing anthems to your faithful ways!
Search high and low, scan skies and land,
    you’ll find nothing and no one quite like God.
The holy angels are in awe before him;
    he looms immense and august over everyone around him.
God-of-the-Angel-Armies, who is like you,
    powerful and faithful from every angle?
 

You put the arrogant ocean in its place
    and calm its waves when they turn unruly.
 

You gave that old hag Egypt the back of your hand,
    you brushed off your enemies with a flick of your wrist.
 

You own the cosmos—you made everything in it,
    everything from atom to archangel.
 

You positioned the North and South Poles;
    the mountains Tabor and Hermon sing duets to you.
With your well-muscled arm and your grip of steel—
    nobody trifles with you!
 

The Right and Justice are the roots of your rule;
    Love and Truth are its fruits.
 

Blessed are the people who know the passwords of praise,
    who shout on parade in the bright presence of God.
Delighted, they dance all day long; they know
    who you are, what you do—they can’t keep it quiet!
Your vibrant beauty has gotten inside us—
    you’ve been so good to us! We’re walking on air!
 

All we are and have we owe to God,     

Holy God of Israel, our King!

^19-37 A long time ago you spoke in a vision,
    you spoke to your faithful beloved:
 

“I’ve crowned a hero,
    I chose the best I could find;
I found David, my servant,
    poured holy oil on his head,
And I’ll keep my hand steadily on him,
    yes, I’ll stick with him through thick and thin.
No enemy will get the best of him,
    no scoundrel will do him in.
 

I’ll weed out all who oppose him,
    I’ll clean out all who hate him.
I’m with him for good and I’ll love him forever;
    I’ve set him on high—he’s riding high!
I’ve put Ocean in his one hand, River in the other;
    he’ll call out, ‘Oh, my Father—my God, my Rock of Salvation!’
Yes, I’m setting him apart as the First of the royal line,
    High King over all of earth’s kings.
 

I’ll preserve him eternally in my love,
    I’ll faithfully do all I so solemnly promised.

    and underwrite his rule.

Joshua 3:14-4:7 – The Message

Wake Up from Your Sleep

^1-2 Watch what God does, and then you do it, like children who learn proper behavior from their parents. Mostly what God does is love you. Keep company with him and learn a life of love. Observe how Christ loved us. His love was not cautious but extravagant. He didn’t love in order to get something from us but to give everything of himself to us. Love like that.

^3-4 Don’t allow love to turn into lust, setting off a downhill slide into sexual promiscuity, filthy practices, or bullying greed. Though some tongues just love the taste of gossip, those who follow Jesus have better uses for language than that. Don’t talk dirty or silly. That kind of talk doesn’t fit our style. Thanksgiving is our dialect.

⁵ You can be sure that using people or religion or things just for what you can get out of them—the usual variations on idolatry—will get you nowhere, and certainly nowhere near the kingdom of Christ, the kingdom of God.

^6-7 Don’t let yourselves get taken in by religious smooth talk. God gets furious with people who are full of religious sales talk but want nothing to do with him. Don’t even hang around people like that.

^8-10 You groped your way through that murk once, but no longer. You’re out in the open now. The bright light of Christ makes your way plain. So no more stumbling around. Get on with it! The good, the right, the true—these are the actions appropriate for daylight hours. Figure out what will please Christ, and then do it.

^11-16 Don’t waste your time on useless work, mere busywork, the barren pursuits of darkness. Expose these things for the sham they are. It’s a scandal when people waste their lives on things they must do in the darkness where no one will see. Rip the cover off those frauds and see how attractive they look in the light of Christ.

Wake up from your sleep,
Climb out of your coffins;
Christ will show you the light!

So watch your step. Use your head. Make the most of every chance you get. These are desperate times!

¹⁷ Don’t live carelessly, unthinkingly. Make sure you understand what the Master wants.

^18-20 Don’t drink too much wine. That cheapens your life. Drink the Spirit of God, huge draughts of him. Sing hymns instead of drinking songs! Sing songs from your heart to Christ. Sing praises over everything, any excuse for a song to God the Father in the name of our Master, Jesus Christ.

Когда народ свернул лагерь, чтобы переправиться через Иордан, священники пошли перед народом, неся ковчег завета. ¹⁵ (А Иордан во все время жатвы выступает из берегов.) Но как только те, кто нес ковчег завета, подошли к Иордану и их ноги коснулись края воды, ¹⁶ вода, текущая сверху, остановилась. Она встала стеной очень далеко, у города Адам, что рядом с Цартаном, а вода, текущая вниз, в море долины^[a], в море Соленое, полностью иссякла. И народ переправился напротив Иерихона.  

¹⁷ Священники, которые несли ковчег завета Господа, стояли на сухой земле в середине Иордана, пока весь народ, идущий мимо них, не переправился посуху.

4 Когда весь народ переправился через Иордан, Господь сказал Иисусу:

² – Выберите из народа двенадцать человек, по одному из каждого рода, ³ и велите им взять двенадцать камней из середины Иордана, оттуда, где стояли священники, перенести их с собой и положить их там, где вы остановитесь сегодня вечером на ночлег.

– Пройдите перед ковчегом Господа, вашего Бога, на середину Иордана. Пусть каждый из вас возьмет на плечи по одному камню, по числу родов израильтян. ⁶ Они будут служить вам памятным знаком. В будущем, когда ваши дети спросят вас: «Что значат эти камни?», – ⁷ скажите им, что воды реки иссякли перед ковчегом завета 

Господа, когда его переправляли через Иордан. Эти камни будут у народа Израиля памятным знаком навеки.

Живите как дети света. ⁹ А плод света – это всякая доброта, праведность и истина. ¹⁰ Старайтесь разузнать, что приятно Господу. ¹¹ Не участвуйте в бесплодных делах тьмы, напротив, обличайте эти дела. ¹² О том, чем такие люди занимаются втайне, даже стыдно говорить. ¹³ Но все тайное при свете становится явным. ¹⁴ Свет делает все видимым, поэтому и говорится:

«Проснись, спящий!
    Воскресни из мертвых –
и Христос осветит тебя»^[c].

¹⁵ Итак, смотрите, поступайте осторожно, не как глупые, но как мудрые. ¹⁶ Дорожите временем, потому что в эти дни много зла. ¹⁷ Не будьте легкомысленны, а лучше старайтесь понять, в чем заключена воля Господа. ¹⁸ Не напивайтесь вином, это ведет к распутству^[d]. Но лучше исполняйтесь Духом. ¹⁹ Наставляйте друг друга псалмами, гимнами и духовными песнопениями. Пойте и прославляйте Господа в ваших сердцах.  

²⁰ Всегда и за все благодарите Бога Отца во Имя нашего Господа Иисуса Христа.

John 9:1-38 – The Message

True Blindness

^1-2 Walking down the street, Jesus saw a man blind from birth. His disciples asked, “Rabbi, who sinned: this man or his parents, causing him to be born blind?”

^3-5 Jesus said, “You’re asking the wrong question. You’re looking for someone to blame. There is no such cause-effect here. Look instead for what God can do. We need to be energetically at work for the One who sent me here, working while the sun shines. When night falls, the workday is over. For as long as I am in the world, there is plenty of light. I am the world’s Light.”

^6-7 He said this and then spit in the dust, made a clay paste with the saliva, rubbed the paste on the blind man’s eyes, and said, “Go, wash at the Pool of Siloam” (Siloam means “Sent”). The man went and washed—and saw.

⁸ Soon the town was buzzing. His relatives and those who year after year had seen him as a blind man begging were saying, “Why, isn’t this the man we knew, who sat here and begged?”

⁹ Others said, “It’s him all right!”

But others objected, “It’s not the same man at all. It just looks like him.”

He said, “It’s me, the very one.”

¹⁰ They said, “How did your eyes get opened?”

¹¹ “A man named Jesus made a paste and rubbed it on my eyes and told me, ‘Go to Siloam and wash.’ I did what he said. When I washed, I saw.”

¹² “So where is he?”

“I don’t know.”

^13-15 They marched the man to the Pharisees. This day when Jesus made the paste and healed his blindness was the Sabbath. The Pharisees grilled him again on how he had come to see. He said, “He put a clay paste on my eyes, and I washed, and now I see.”

¹⁶ Some of the Pharisees said, “Obviously, this man can’t be from God. He doesn’t keep the Sabbath.”

Others countered, “How can a bad man do miraculous, God-revealing things like this?” There was a split in their ranks.

¹⁷ They came back at the blind man, “You’re the expert. He opened your eyes. What do you say about him?”

He said, “He is a prophet.”

^18-19 The Jews didn’t believe it, didn’t believe the man was blind to begin with. So they called the parents of the man now bright-eyed with sight. They asked them, “Is this your son, the one you say was born blind? So how is it that he now sees?”

^20-23 His parents said, “We know he is our son, and we know he was born blind. But we don’t know how he came to see—haven’t a clue about who opened his eyes. Why don’t you ask him? He’s a grown man and can speak for himself.” (His parents were talking like this because they were intimidated by the Jewish leaders, who had already decided that anyone who took a stand that this was the Messiah would be kicked out of the meeting place. That’s why his parents said, “Ask him. He’s a grown man.”)

²⁴ They called the man back a second time—the man who had been blind—and told him, “Give credit to God. We know this man is an impostor.”

²⁵ He replied, “I know nothing about that one way or the other. But I know one thing for sure: I was blind . . . I now see.”

²⁶ They said, “What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?”

²⁷ “I’ve told you over and over and you haven’t listened. Why do you want to hear it again? Are you so eager to become his disciples?”

^28-29 With that they jumped all over him. “You might be a disciple of that man, but we’re disciples of Moses. We know for sure that God spoke to Moses, but we have no idea where this man even comes from.”

^30-33 The man replied, “This is amazing! You claim to know nothing about him, but the fact is, he opened my eyes! It’s well known that God isn’t at the beck and call of sinners, but listens carefully to anyone who lives in reverence and does his will. That someone opened the eyes of a man born blind has never been heard of—ever. If this man didn’t come from God, he wouldn’t be able to do anything.”

³⁴ They said, “You’re nothing but dirt! How dare you take that tone with us!” Then they threw him out in the street.

³⁵ Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, and went and found him. He asked him, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?”

³⁶ The man said, “Point him out to me, sir, so that I can believe in him.”

³⁷ Jesus said, “You’re looking right at him. Don’t you recognize my voice?”

³⁸ “Master, I believe,” the man said, and worshiped him.

Наступает ночь, и тогда уже никто не сможет ничего делать. ⁵ Пока Я в мире, Я – Свет миру.

⁶ Сказав это, Иисус плюнул на землю, смешал слюну с землей и помазал ею глаза слепому.

⁷ – А теперь пойди и умойся в пруду Силоам, – сказал Он слепому (Силоам значит: «Посланный»).

Слепой пошел, умылся и вернулся зрячим. ⁸ Соседи его и те, кто раньше видели его просящим милостыню, спрашивали:

– Разве это не он сидел и просил милостыню?

⁹ Одни говорили:

– Да, это он.

Другие говорили:

– Нет, он только похож на него.

Исцеленный же сам говорил:

– Это я.

¹⁰ – Как же ты прозрел? – спрашивали они.

¹¹ Он ответил:

– Человек, Которого зовут Иисусом, смешал грязь и помазал мои глаза, потом Он сказал мне пойти в Силоам и умыться. Я пошел, умылся и стал видеть.

¹² – Где Он? – спрашивали они его.

– Я не знаю, – отвечал исцеленный.

Религиозные вожди допрашивают исцеленного

¹³ Человека, который раньше был слепым, привели к фарисеям, ¹⁴ потому что Иисус смешал грязь и открыл ему глаза в субботу. ¹⁵ Фарисеи тоже спросили его, как он обрел зрение.

– Он помазал мои глаза грязью, – ответил исцеленный, – я умылся и теперь вижу.

¹⁶ Некоторые фарисеи стали говорить:

– Человек Этот не от Бога, потому что Он не соблюдает субботу.

Другие же спрашивали:

– Как грешник может творить такие знамения?

Мнения разделились. ¹⁷ Тогда они опять стали расспрашивать слепого:

– Что ты сам можешь сказать о Нем? Это ведь твои глаза Он открыл.

Человек ответил:

– Он пророк.

¹⁸ Иудеи все еще не верили, что он был слеп и что обрел зрение, и поэтому позвали его родителей.

¹⁹ – Это ваш сын? – спросили они. – Это о нем вы говорите, что он родился слепым? Как же он может сейчас видеть?

²⁰ – Мы знаем, что это наш сын, – ответили родители, – и мы знаем, что он родился слепым. ²¹ А как он сейчас может видеть и кто открыл его глаза, мы не знаем. Спросите его сами. Он уже совершеннолетний и может сам ответить за себя.

²² Родители так ответили из боязни перед иудеями, так как те уже вынесли решение о том, что кто признает Иисуса Христом, тот будет отлучен от синагоги. ²³ Поэтому родители и сказали: «Он уже совершеннолетний, спросите его самого».

²⁴ Они во второй раз вызвали человека, который был слепым.

– Воздай славу Богу^[a], – сказали они, – мы знаем, что Этот Человек грешник.

²⁵ Исцеленный ответил:

– Грешник Он или нет, я не знаю. Я знаю одно, что я был слеп, а сейчас вижу!

²⁶ Они спросили:

– Что Он с тобой сделал? Как Он открыл твои глаза?

²⁷ Он ответил:

– Я уже говорил вам, а вы не слушали. Зачем вы хотите еще раз это услышать? Вы тоже хотите стать Его учениками?

²⁸ Они стали оскорблять его и сказали:

– Сам ты Его ученик! Мы ученики Моисея! ²⁹ Мы знаем, что с Моисеем говорил Бог, а об Этом Человеке мы даже не знаем, откуда Он.

³⁰ Исцеленный ответил:

– Вот это-то и странно! Вы не знаете, откуда Он, а Он открыл мне глаза. ³¹ Мы знаем, что Бог грешников не слушает. Он слушает только тех, кто чтит Его и поступает по Его воле. ³² Ведь испокон веков никто не слышал, чтобы у рожденного слепым открылись глаза^[b]. ³³ Если бы Этот Человек не был от Бога, то Он не смог бы сделать ничего такого.

³⁴ Они на это ответили:

– Ты был рожден в грехах, как ты смеешь нас учить!

И они выгнали его вон.

Иисус говорит о духовной слепоте

³⁵ Иисус услышал о том, что фарисеи выгнали его вон, нашел его и спросил:

– Ты веришь в Сына Человеческого?

³⁶ – А кто Он, Господин? – спросил исцеленный. – Скажи мне, чтобы я в Него поверил.

³⁷ Иисус сказал:

– Ты сейчас Его видишь, Он говорит с тобой.

³⁸ Тогда человек ответил:

– Господи, я верю, – и поклонился Иисусу.
