Psalm 148 – The Voice

Praise the Eternal!
 

All you in the heavens, praise the Eternal;
    praise Him from the highest places!
² All you, His messengers and His armies in heaven:
    praise Him!
³ Sun, moon, and all you brilliant stars above:
    praise Him!
⁴ Highest heavens and all you waters above the heavens:
    praise Him!

⁵ Let all things join together in a concert of praise to the name of the Eternal,
    for He gave the command and they were created.
⁶ He put them in their places to stay forever—
    He declared it so, and it is final.

⁷ Everything on earth, join in and praise the Eternal;
    sea monsters and creatures of the deep,
⁸ Lightning and hail, snow and foggy mists,
    violent winds all respond to His command.

⁹ Mountains and hills,
    fruit trees and cedar forests,
¹⁰ All you animals both wild and tame,
    reptiles and birds who take flight:
    praise the Lord.

¹¹ All kings and all nations,
    princes and all judges of the earth,
¹² All people, young men and women,
    old men and children alike,
    praise the Lord.

¹³ Let them all praise the name of the Eternal!
    For His name stands alone above all others.
    His glory shines greater than anything above or below.
¹⁴ He has made His people strong;
    He is the praise of all who are godly,
    the praise of the children of Israel, those whom He holds close.

Psalm 150 – The Voice

If Psalm 150 is any indication, then the worship of the one True God ought to be full of life and energy. Consider what it must have looked and sounded like in those days: voices lifted, shouting for joy, trumpets blaring, stringed instruments playing, people dancing, pipes humming, tambourines keeping rhythm, cymbals crashing. There are times when worship ought to break out in joy. Is it possible that our worship is too quiet, too reserved, too structured?

¹ Praise the Eternal!
Praise the True God inside His temple.
    Praise Him beneath massive skies, under moonlit stars and rising sun.
 
² Praise Him for His powerful acts, redeeming His people.
    Praise Him for His greatness that surpasses our time and understanding.

^3-4 Praise Him with the blast of trumpets high into the heavens,
    and praise Him with harps and lyres
    and the rhythm of the tambourines skillfully played by those who love and fear the Eternal.
Praise Him with singing and dancing;
    praise Him with flutes and strings of all kinds!
 
⁵ Praise Him with crashing cymbals,
    loud clashing cymbals!
⁶ No one should be left out;
    Let every man and every beast—
    every creature that has the breath of the Lord—praise the Eternal!
 
Praise the Eternal!

This doxology not only closes Book Five, but it also closes the entire Book of Psalms. Up until now, the songs in this book have reminded us of all the reasons we should praise God. Some songs have even commanded us to praise Him. But this closing remark takes the command to praise one step further: everything alive—humans, animals, and heaven’s creatures—must praise Him. Praise is what God created us to do; it is one of our highest purposes in life. So it is no wonder that the longest book of the Bible is purely devoted to helping us do just that.

Psalm 91 – The Voice

He who takes refuge in the shelter of the Most High
    will be safe in the shadow of the Almighty.
² He will say to the Eternal, “My shelter, my mighty fortress,
    my God, I place all my trust in You.”
³ For He will rescue you from the snares set by your enemies who entrap you
    and from deadly plagues.
⁴ Like a bird protecting its young, God will cover you with His feathers,
    will protect you under His great wings;
    His faithfulness will form a shield around you, a rock-solid wall to protect you.

Psalm 91 is a beautiful psalm of trust in God. But how does God take care of all His people, all at the same time? Well, keep reading because Psalm 91 is one of just a few places in Scripture that describe what we might call “guardian angels” (Exodus 23:20; Psalm 43:3). Though rare, these passages teach that God is not alone in maintaining and protecting His creation and His people. He has made a host of heavenly messengers ready to do His bidding, and His bidding is often to guard His people throughout their lives and protect them—sometimes from dangers they are not even aware of.

⁵ You will not dread the terrors that haunt the night
    or enemy arrows that fly in the day
⁶ Or the plagues that lurk in darkness
    or the disasters that wreak havoc at noon.

⁷ A thousand may fall on your left,
    ten thousand may die on your right,
    but these horrors won’t come near you.
⁸ Only your eyes will witness
    the punishment that awaits the evil,
    but you will not suffer because of it.

⁹ For you made the Eternal [your]^[a] refuge,
    the Most High your only home.
¹⁰ No evil will come to you;
    plagues will be turned away at your door.

¹¹ He will command His heavenly messengers to guard you,
    to keep you safe in every way.
¹² They will hold you up in their hands
    so that you will not crash, or fall, or even graze your foot on a stone.^[b]
13 You will walk on the lion and the cobra;
    you will trample the lion and the serpent underfoot.

¹⁴ “Because he clings to Me in love,
    I will rescue him from harm;
    I will set him above danger.
Because he has known Me by name,
¹⁵ He will call on Me, and I will answer.
    I’ll be with him through hard times;
    I’ll rescue him and grant him honor.
¹⁶ I’ll reward him with many good years on this earth
    and let him witness My salvation.”

Psalm 92 – The Voice

A song for the Sabbath Day.

Psalm 92 gives thanks to God for His salvation. The superscription provides the only reference to the Sabbath in the Book of Psalms.

¹ How good it is to give thanks to the Eternal
    and to praise Your name with song, O Most High;
² To speak of Your unfailing love in the morning
    and rehearse Your faithfulness as night begins to fall. ³ How good it is to praise to the sound of strings—lute and harp—
    the stirring melodies of the lyre. ⁴ Because You, O Eternal One, thrill me with the things You have done,
    I will sing with joy in light of Your deeds.

⁵ Your works are marvelous, O Eternal One!
    Your thoughts are unfathomable.
⁶ But a weak-minded man can’t understand this;
    foolish people are unable to see ⁷ That evil men sprout like grass
    and wicked men flourish,
    only so that they will be doomed forever. ⁸ But You, O Eternal One, are above all, forever. ⁹ As for Your enemies, O Eternal One,
    their fate is obvious:
    those who hate You will not survive;
    those who practice evil will be broken in pieces.

¹⁰ But You have made me strong as a wild ox,
    anointed me with the refreshing oil of Your blessing.
¹¹ And I have seen with my own eyes my enemies defeated;
    I have heard with my own ears my attackers cut down.

¹² Those who are devoted to God will flourish like budding date-palm trees;
    they will grow strong and tall like cedars in Lebanon.
¹³ Those planted in the house of the Eternal
    will thrive in the courts of our God. ¹⁴ They will bear fruit into old age;
    even in winter, they will be green and full of sap ¹⁵ To display that the Eternal is righteous.
 
    He is my rock, and there is no shadow of evil in Him.

Morning

Isaiah 55:3-9 – The Voice

 Listen closely, and come even closer. My words will give life,
        for I will make a covenant with you that cannot be broken, a promise
    Of My enduring presence and support like I gave to David.^[a]
 
4     See, I made him a witness to the peoples, a leader and commander among the nations.
 
⁵     Now you will issue a call to nations from all over the world—
        people whom you do not know and who do not know you.
    They will come running, because of Me, your God
        because the Eternal, the Holy One of Israel, has made you beautiful.

⁶ So turn your attention and seek the Eternal One while it is still possible;
    call on Him while He is nearby.
 
⁷ Let those who are busy plotting violence and doing wrong
    stop right now, turn, and do right.
Let them turn back to the Eternal so they can experience His compassion.
    God will excuse our past wrongs. Our God’s forgiveness is inexhaustible.

Eternal One: ⁸ My intentions are not always yours,
        and I do not go about things as you do.
 
⁹     My thoughts and My ways are above and beyond you,
        just as heaven is far from your reach here on earth.

Isaiah 62:1-9– The Voice

I will not keep quiet for Zion’s sake;
    I will not remain silent
Until Jerusalem’s justice shines like the light of a new day
    and her liberation blazes like a torch in the dead of night.
 
² Jerusalem, the nations of the world will witness your righteousness,
    the most powerful world leaders will see your brilliance, And you will be called something new, something brand new,
    a name given by none other than the Eternal One. ³ And you will be the crowning glory of the Eternal’s power,
    a royal crown cradled in His palm and held aloft by your God for all to see.  
⁴ People won’t talk about you anymore
    using words like “forsaken” or “empty.” Instead, you will be called “My delight” and the land around you “Married,”
    because the Eternal is pleased with you and has bound Himself to your land.  

⁵ As a young man marries the woman he loves,
    so your sons will marry you, Jerusalem. As a groom takes joy in his bride,
    so your God will take joy in you.

⁶ I have stationed watchmen on your walls, Jerusalem.
    Day and night, they never stop calling out.
You, too, must not rest or grow silent;
    keep reminding the Eternal to watch over Jerusalem.
 
⁷ Tirelessly pester God—give Him no rest—until He reestablishes Jerusalem
    and makes it worthy of praise throughout the whole world. ⁸ The Eternal has promised with all divine power and might:

Eternal One: I will never again turn over your assets to your enemies,
        never feed them from your grain stores
    Or give them the wine you have labored to produce.
 
⁹     Instead, those who harvest the grain will eat its bounty,
        and offer praise to the Eternal;
    And those who gather the grapes will drink of their richness
        in the courtyards outside the temple.

Colossians 3:1-17 – The Voice

Paul knows the people in Colossae are facing many religious and philosophical options, none of which are neutral. Notice Paul doesn’t say, “Just add Jesus to what you already believe,” or, “Factor Jesus into your philosophy,” or, “Include Jesus in this or that ritual.” The claim that “Jesus is Lord” does not allow that. If Jesus is Creator, Sustainer, and Redeemer of all creation, then all other teachings must give way. All people must bow before Him and only Him.

So it comes down to this: since you have been raised with the Anointed One, the Liberating King, set your mind on heaven above. The Anointed is there, seated at God’s right hand. ² Stay focused on what’s above, not on earthly things, ³ because your old life is dead and gone. Your new life is now hidden, enmeshed with the Anointed who is in God. ⁴ On that day when the Anointed One—who is our^[a] very life—is revealed, you will be revealed with Him in glory!  
⁵ So kill your earthly impulses: loose sex, impure actions, unbridled sensuality, wicked thoughts, and greed (which is essentially idolatry). ⁶ It’s because of these that God’s wrath is coming [upon the sons and daughters of disobedience],^[b] so avoid them at all costs. ⁷ These are the same things you once pursued, and together you spawned a life of evil. ⁸ But now make sure you shed such things: anger, rage, spite, slander, and abusive language. ⁹ And don’t go on lying to each other since you have sloughed away your old skin along with its evil practices ¹⁰ for a fresh new you, which is continually renewed in knowledge according to the image of the One who created you. ¹¹ In this re-creation there is no distinction between Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian and conqueror,^[c] or slave and free because the Anointed is the whole and dwells in us all.

Paul tells them the key to remain unified is to show compassion and forgiveness toward one another.

¹² Since you are all set apart by God, made holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with a holy way of life: compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. ¹³ Put up with one another. Forgive. Pardon any offenses against one another, as the Lord has pardoned you, because you should act in kind.  

¹⁴ But above all these, put on love! Love is the perfect tie to bind these together.  
¹⁵ Let your hearts fall under the rule of the Anointed’s peace (the peace you were called to as one body), and be thankful.

¹⁶ Let the word of the Anointed One richly inhabit your lives. With all wisdom teach, counsel, and instruct one another. Sing the psalms, compose hymns and songs inspired by the Spirit, and keep on singing—sing to God from hearts full and spilling over with thankfulness. ¹⁷ Surely, no matter what you are doing (speaking, writing, or working), do it all in the name of Jesus our Master, sending thanks through Him to God our Father.

Итак, если вы были воскрешены со Христом, то стремитесь к небесному, туда, где Христос сидит по правую руку от Бога^[a]. ² Обращайте ваши мысли к небесному, а не к земному. ³ Вы умерли для этого мира, и ваша жизнь сокрыта вместе со Христом в Боге. ⁴ Ваша жизнь – Христос, и когда Он будет явлен миру, тогда и вы будете явлены вместе с Ним в славе.

 Before faith came on the scene, the law did its best to keep us in line, restraining us until the faith that was to come was fully revealed. ²⁴ So then, the law was like a tutor, assigned to train us and point us to the Anointed, so that we will be acquitted of all wrong and made right by faith. ²⁵ But now that true faith has come, we have no need for a tutor. ²⁶ It is your faith in the Anointed Jesus that makes all of you children of God ²⁷ because all of you who have been initiated into the Anointed One through the ceremonial washing of baptism^[a] have put Him on. ²⁸ It makes no difference whether you are a Jew or a Greek, a slave or a freeman, a man or a woman, because in Jesus the Anointed, the Liberating King, you are all one. ²⁹ Since you belong to Him and are now subject to His power, you are the descendant of Abraham and the heir of God’s glory according to the promise.

4 Listen. I am going to explain how this all works: When a minor inherits an estate from his parents, although he is the owner of everything, he is the same as a slave. ² Until the day set by his father, the minor is subject to the authorities or guardians whom his father put in charge. ³ It is like that with us; there was a time when we were like children held under the elemental powers of this world. ⁴ When the right time arrived, God sent His Son into this world (born of a woman, subject to the law) ⁵ to free those who, just like Him, were subject to the law. Ultimately He wanted us all to be adopted as sons and daughters.  

⁶ Because you are now part of God’s family, He sent the Spirit of His Son into our hearts; and the Spirit calls out, “Abba, Father.” ⁷ You no longer have to live as a slave because you are a child of God. And since you are His child, God guarantees an inheritance is waiting for you.

Пока не пришла вера, мы были узниками, охраняемыми Законом, до того времени, когда эта вера будет нам открыта. ²⁴ Итак, Закон воспитывал нас до прихода Христа^[a], чтобы, когда Он придет, получить оправдание по вере. ²⁵ Но вера уже пришла, и нам больше не нужно воспитание Закона.

Не рабы, а сыновья

²⁶ Благодаря вере в Христа Иисуса все вы стали сынами Бога. ²⁷ Ведь все крещеные в Христа «облеклись» в Христа. ²⁸ Нет больше ни иудея, ни грека, ни раба, ни свободного, ни мужчины и ни женщины, вы все одно в Христе Иисусе! ²⁹ А если вы принадлежите Христу, то тогда вы и являетесь потомством^[b] Авраама и наследниками Божьего обещания.

4 Я имею в виду, что, пока наследник еще ребенок, он в своих правах ничем не отличается от раба, хотя на самом деле ему принадлежит все имение.  

² Но в детстве у него есть воспитатели и опекуны, которым он подчиняется до определенного времени, установленного его отцом. ³ Так и мы, пока были «детьми», находились в рабстве у основ в мире. ⁴ Но когда пришло назначенное время, Бог послал Своего Сына, рожденного от женщины, подвластного Закону, ⁵ чтобы искупить находящихся под Законом и усыновить нас. ⁶ А поскольку вы – сыны Бога, то Бог поселил в ваши сердца Духа Своего Сына, Духа, Который взывает к Богу: «Абба^[c]! Отец!». ⁷ Так что ты уже не раб, а сын. А если сын, то Бог сделал тебя и наследником.

John 14:6-14 -- The Voice

Jesus: ⁶ I am the path, the truth, and the energy of life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. ⁷ If you know Me, you know the Father. Rest assured now; you know Him and have seen Him.

Philip: ⁸ Lord, all I am asking is that You show us the Father.

Jesus (to Philip): ⁹ I have lived with you all this time, and you still don’t know who I am? If you have seen Me, you have seen the Father. How can you keep asking to see the Father? ¹⁰ Don’t you believe Me when I say I abide in the Father and the Father dwells in Me? I’m not making this up as I go along. The Father has given Me these truths that I have been speaking to you, and He empowers all My actions. ¹¹ Accept these truths: I am in the Father, and the Father is in Me. If you have trouble believing based on My words, believe because of the things I have done. ¹² I tell you the truth: whoever believes in Me will be able to do what I have done, but they will do even greater things, because I will return to be with the Father. ¹³ Whatever you ask for in My name, I will do it so that the Father will get glory from the Son. ¹⁴ Let Me say it again: if you ask for anything in My name, I will do it.

– Я есть путь, истина и жизнь. Никто не приходит к Отцу, как только через Меня. ⁷ Если бы вы действительно знали Меня, вы бы знали и Моего Отца. И сейчас вы знаете Его и видели Его.

⁸ Филипп сказал:

– Господи, покажи нам Отца, и этого нам будет достаточно.

⁹ Иисус ответил:

– Неужели ты не знаешь Меня, Филипп? Ведь Я уже столько времени среди вас! Кто видел Меня, тот видел и Отца. Как ты можешь говорить: «Покажи нам Отца»? ¹⁰ Неужели вы не верите, что Я в Отце и Отец во Мне? Слова, которые Я вам говорю, не Мои слова. Это Отец, Который живет во Мне, совершает Свою работу. ¹¹ Верьте Мне, Я говорю вам, что Я в Отце и Отец во Мне, или верьте, по крайней мере, по Моим делам. ¹² Говорю вам истину: кто верит в Меня, тот сможет делать то, что Я делаю. Он сможет сделать еще больше, потому что Я возвращаюсь к Отцу. ¹³ Я сделаю все, чего бы вы ни попросили во Имя Мое, чтобы Отец был прославлен через Сына. ¹⁴ Чего ни попросите во Имя Мое, Я то сделаю.
