 The Glories of God’s Law

¹ Happy are those whose way is blameless,
    who walk in the law of the Lord.
² Happy are those who keep his decrees,
    who seek him with their whole heart, ³ who also do no wrong,
    but walk in his ways. ⁴ You have commanded your precepts
    to be kept diligently. ⁵ O that my ways may be steadfast
    in keeping your statutes! ⁶ Then I shall not be put to shame,
    having my eyes fixed on all your commandments. ⁷ I will praise you with an upright heart,
    when I learn your righteous ordinances. ⁸ I will observe your statutes;
    do not utterly forsake me.

⁹ How can young people keep their way pure?
    By guarding it according to your word.
¹⁰ With my whole heart I seek you;
    do not let me stray from your commandments. ¹¹ I treasure your word in my heart,
    so that I may not sin against you. ¹² Blessed are you, O Lord;
    teach me your statutes. ¹³ With my lips I declare
    all the ordinances of your mouth. ¹⁴ I delight in the way of your decrees
    as much as in all riches. ¹⁵ I will meditate on your precepts,
    and fix my eyes on your ways. ¹⁶ I will delight in your statutes;
    I will not forget your word.

¹⁷ Deal bountifully with your servant,

 Plea for Help in Evil Times

¹ Help, O Lord, for there is no longer anyone who is godly;
    the faithful have disappeared from humankind.
² They utter lies to each other;
    with flattering lips and a double heart they speak.

³ May the Lord cut off all flattering lips,
    the tongue that makes great boasts,
⁴ those who say, “With our tongues we will prevail;
    our lips are our own—who is our master?”

⁵ “Because the poor are despoiled, because the needy groan,
    I will now rise up,” says the Lord;
    “I will place them in the safety for which they long.”
 

⁶ The promises of the Lord are promises that are pure,
    silver refined in a furnace on the ground,
    purified seven times.

⁷ You, O Lord, will protect us;
    you will guard us from this generation forever.
⁸ On every side the wicked prowl,
    as vileness is exalted among humankind.

    How long will you hide your face from me?

How long shall my enemy be exalted over me?

³ Consider and answer me, O Lord my God!
    Give light to my eyes, or I will sleep the sleep of death,
⁴ and my enemy will say, “I have prevailed”;
    my foes will rejoice because I am shaken.

⁵ But I trusted in your steadfast love;
    my heart shall rejoice in your salvation.
 

⁶ I will sing to the Lord,
    because he has dealt bountifully with me.

Cain Murders Abel

Now the man knew his wife Eve, and she conceived and bore Cain, saying, “I have produced^[a] a man with the help of the Lord.” ² Next she bore his brother Abel. Now Abel was a keeper of sheep, and Cain a tiller of the ground. ³ In the course of time Cain brought to the Lord an offering of the fruit of the ground, ⁴ and Abel for his part brought of the firstlings of his flock, their fat portions. And the Lord had regard for Abel and his offering, ⁵ but for Cain and his offering he had no regard. So Cain was very angry, and his countenance fell. ⁶ The Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry, and why has your countenance fallen? ⁷ If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin is lurking at the door; its desire is for you, but you must master it.”

Hebrews 2:11-18 –New Revised Standard Version

For the one who sanctifies and those who are sanctified all have one Father.^[a] 
For this reason Jesus^[b] is not ashamed to call them brothers and sisters,^{[c] 12} saying,

“I will proclaim your name to my brothers and sisters,^[d]
    in the midst of the congregation I will praise you.”

¹³ And again,

“I will put my trust in him.”

And again,

“Here am I and the children whom God has given me.”

¹⁴ Since, therefore, the children share flesh and blood, he himself likewise shared the same things, so that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, ¹⁵ and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by the fear of death. ¹⁶ For it is clear that he did not come to help angels, but the descendants of Abraham. ¹⁷ Therefore he had to become like his brothers and sisters^[e] in every respect, so that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make a sacrifice of atonement for the sins of the people. ¹⁸ Because he himself was tested by what he suffered, he is able to help those who are being tested.

The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him and declared, “Here is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! ³⁰ This is he of whom I said, ‘After me comes a man who ranks ahead of me because he was before me.’ ³¹ I myself did not know him; but I came baptizing with water for this reason, that he might be revealed to Israel.” ³² And John testified, “I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him. ³³ I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ ³⁴ And I myself have seen and have testified that this is the Son of God.”^[a]

The First Disciples of Jesus

³⁵ The next day John again was standing with two of his disciples, ³⁶ and as he watched Jesus walk by, he exclaimed, “Look, here is the Lamb of God!” ³⁷ The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus. ³⁸ When Jesus turned and saw them following, he said to them, “What are you looking for?” They said to him, “Rabbi” (which translated means Teacher), “where are you staying?”  

³⁹ He said to them, “Come and see.” They came and saw where he was staying, and they remained with him that day. It was about four o’clock in the afternoon.  

⁴⁰ One of the two who heard John speak and followed him was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. ⁴¹ He first found his brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which is translated Anointed^[b]). ⁴² He brought Simon^[c] to Jesus, who looked at him and said, “You are Simon son of John. You are to be called Cephas” (which is translated Peter^[d]).

⁴⁰ Одним из двух, слышавших слова Иоанна об Иисусе и пошедших за Ним, был брат Симона Петра, Андрей. ⁴¹ Он разыскал своего брата Симона и сказал:

– Мы нашли Мессию! (Это значит «Помазанник»^[c].)

⁴² И привел его к Иисусу. Иисус посмотрел на Симона и сказал:
