¹ O God, hear my cry for help!
 

Pay attention to my prayer!
² From the most remote place on earth
I call out to you in my despair.
Lead me up to a rocky summit where I can be safe!
 

³ Indeed, you are my shelter,
a strong tower that protects me from the enemy.
⁴ I will be a permanent guest in your home;
I will find shelter in the protection of your wings. (Selah)
 

⁵ For you, O God, hear my vows;
you grant me the reward that belongs to your loyal followers.
 

⁶ Give the king long life!
Make his lifetime span several generations!
 

⁷ May he reign forever before God!
Decree that your loyal love and faithfulness should protect him.
 

⁸ Then I will sing praises to your name continually,

³ How long will you threaten a man?
All of you are murderers,
as dangerous as a leaning wall or an unstable fence.
 

⁴ They spend all their time planning how to bring him down.
They love to use deceit;
they pronounce blessings with their mouths,
but inwardly they utter curses. (Selah)
 

⁵ Patiently wait for God alone, my soul!
For he is the one who gives me confidence.
 

⁶ He alone is my protector and deliverer.
He is my refuge; I will not be upended.
 

⁷ God delivers me and exalts me;
God is my strong protector and my shelter.
 

⁸ Trust in him at all times, you people!
Pour out your hearts before him!
God is our shelter! (Selah)
 

⁹ Men are nothing but a mere breath;
human beings are unreliable.
When they are weighed in the scales,
all of them together are lighter than air.
 

¹⁰ Do not trust in what you can gain by oppression!
Do not put false confidence in what you can gain by robbery!

¹¹ God has declared one principle;

Praise the Lord!
How blessed is the one who obeys the Lord,
who takes great delight in keeping his commands.
 

² His descendants will be powerful on the earth;
the godly will be blessed.
 

³ His house contains wealth and riches;
his integrity endures.
 

⁴ In the darkness a light shines for the godly,
for each one who is merciful, compassionate, and just.
 

⁵ It goes well for the one who generously lends money,
and conducts his business honestly.
 

⁶ For he will never be upended;
others will always remember one who is just.
 

⁷ He does not fear bad news.
He is confident; he trusts in the Lord.
 

⁸ His resolve is firm; he will not succumb to fear
before he looks in triumph on his enemies.

¹⁵ The Lord has removed the judgment against you;
he has turned back your enemy.
Israel’s king, the Lord, is in your midst!
You no longer need to fear disaster.
 

¹⁶ On that day they will say to Jerusalem,
“Don’t be afraid, Zion!
Your hands must not be paralyzed from panic!
 

¹⁷ The Lord your God is in your midst;
he is a warrior who can deliver.
He takes great delight in you;
he renews you by his love;
he shouts for joy over you.”
 

¹⁸ “As for those who grieve because they cannot attend the festivals—
I took them away from you;

Titus 1:1-16 – New English Translation

Salutation

1 From Paul, a slave of God and apostle of Jesus Christ, to further the faith of God’s chosen ones and the knowledge of the truth that is in keeping with godliness, ² in hope of eternal life, which God, who does not lie, promised before time began. ³ But now in his own time he has made his message evident through the preaching I was entrusted with according to the command of God our Savior. ⁴ To Titus, my genuine son in a common faith. Grace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Savior!

Titus’ Task on Crete

⁵ The reason I left you in Crete was to set in order the remaining matters and to appoint elders in every town, as I directed you. ⁶ An elder must be blameless, the husband of one wife, with faithful children who cannot be charged with dissipation or rebellion. ⁷ For the overseer must be blameless as one entrusted with God’s work, not arrogant, not prone to anger, not a drunkard, not violent, not greedy for gain. ⁸ Instead he must be hospitable, devoted to what is good, sensible, upright, devout, and self-controlled. ⁹ He must hold firmly to the faithful message as it has been taught, so that he will be able to give exhortation in such healthy teaching and correct those who speak against it.
¹⁰ For there are many rebellious people, idle talkers, and deceivers, especially those with Jewish connections, ¹¹ who must be silenced because they mislead whole families by teaching for dishonest gain what ought not to be taught. ¹² A certain one of them, in fact, one of their own prophets, said, “Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons.” ¹³ Such testimony is true. For this reason rebuke them sharply that they may be healthy in the faith ¹⁴ and not pay attention to Jewish myths and commands of people who reject the truth. ¹⁵ All is pure to those who are pure. But to those who are corrupt and unbelieving, nothing is pure, but both their minds and consciences are corrupted. ¹⁶ They profess to know God but with their deeds they deny him, since they are detestable, disobedient, and unfit for any good deed.

Explanatory Preface

1 Now many have undertaken to compile an account of the things that have been fulfilled among us, ² like the accounts passed on to us by those who were eyewitnesses and servants of the word from the beginning. ³ So it seemed good to me as well, because I have followed all things carefully from the beginning, to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, ⁴ so that you may know for certain the things you were taught.

Birth Announcement of John the Baptist

⁵ During the reign of Herod king of Judea, there lived a priest named Zechariah who belonged to the priestly division of Abijah, and he had a wife named Elizabeth, who was a descendant of Aaron. ⁶ They were both righteous in the sight of God, following all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blamelessly. ⁷ But they did not have a child, because Elizabeth was barren, and they were both very old.

⁸ Now while Zechariah was serving as priest before God when his division was on duty, ⁹ he was chosen by lot, according to the custom of the priesthood, to enter the holy place of the Lord and burn incense. ¹⁰ Now the whole crowd of people were praying outside at the hour of the incense offering. ¹¹ An angel of the Lord, standing on the right side of the altar of incense, appeared to him. ¹² And Zechariah, visibly shaken when he saw the angel, was seized with fear. ¹³ But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zechariah, for your prayer has been heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son; you will name him John. ¹⁴ Joy and gladness will come to you, and many will rejoice at his birth, ¹⁵ for he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He must never drink wine or strong drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit, even before his birth. ¹⁶ He will turn many of the people of Israel to the Lord their God. ¹⁷ And he will go as forerunner before the Lord in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers back to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready for the Lord a people prepared for him.”

¹⁸ Zechariah said to the angel, “How can I be sure of this? For I am an old man, and my wife is old as well.” ¹⁹ The angel answered him, “I am Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God, and I was sent to speak to you and to bring you this good news. ²⁰ And now, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their time, you will be silent, unable to speak, until the day these things take place.”

²¹ Now the people were waiting for Zechariah, and they began to wonder why he was delayed in the holy place. ²² When he came out, he was not able to speak to them. They realized that he had seen a vision in the holy place, because he was making signs to them and remained unable to speak. ²³ When his time of service was over, he went to his home.

⁵ Во время правления Ирода^[a], царя Иудеи, был священник по имени Захария, из смены Авия^[b]. Его жена тоже была потомком Аарона, ее звали Елисавета. ⁶ Оба они были праведны перед Богом, живя непорочно и строго соблюдая все заповеди и установления Господа. ⁷ Но у них не было детей, потому что Елисавета была бесплодна.
