Morning

Psalm 103 – The Voice

A song of David.

¹ O my soul, come, praise the Eternal
    with all that is in me—body, emotions, mind, and will—every part of who I am—
    praise His holy name.
² O my soul, come, praise the Eternal;
    sing a song from a grateful heart;
    sing and never forget all the good He has done.
³ Despite all your many offenses, He forgives and releases you.
    More than any doctor, He heals your diseases.
⁴ He reaches deep into the pit to deliver you from death.
    He crowns you with unfailing love and compassion like a king.
⁵ When your soul is famished and withering,
    He fills you with good and beautiful things, satisfying you as long as you live.
    He makes you strong like an eagle, restoring your youth.

⁶ When people are crushed, wronged, enslaved, raped, murdered,
    the Eternal is just;
    He makes the wrongs right.
⁷ He showed Moses His ways;
    He allowed His people Israel to see His wonders and acts of power.
⁸ The Eternal is compassionate and merciful.
    When we cross all the lines, He is patient with us.
    When we struggle against Him, He lovingly stays with us—changing, convicting, prodding;
⁹ He will not constantly criticize,
    nor will He hold a grudge forever.
¹⁰ Thankfully, God does not punish us for our sins and depravity as we deserve.
    In His mercy, He tempers justice with peace.
¹¹ Measure how high heaven is above the earth;
    God’s wide, loving, kind heart is greater for those who revere Him.
¹² You see, God takes all our crimes—our seemingly inexhaustible sins—and removes them.
    As far as east is from the west, He removes them from us.
¹³ An earthly father expresses love for his children;
    it is no different with our heavenly Father;
The Eternal shows His love for those who revere Him.
¹⁴ For He knows what we are made of;
    He knows our frame is frail, and He remembers we came from dust.

¹⁵ The children of Adam are like grass;
    their days are few;
    they flourish for a time like flowers in a meadow.
¹⁶ As the wind blows over the field and the bloom is gone,
    it doesn’t take much to blow us out of the memory of that place.
¹⁷ But the unfailing love of the Eternal is always and eternal
    for those who reverently run after Him.
    He extends His justice on and on to future generations,
¹⁸ To those who will keep His bond of love
    and remember to walk in the guidance of His commands.

¹⁹ The Eternal has established His throne up in the heavens.
    He rules over every seen and unseen realm and creature.
²⁰ Adore Him! Give Him praise, you heavenly messengers,
    you powerful creatures who listen to
    and act on His every word.
²¹ Give praise to the Eternal, all armies of heaven—
    you servants who stand ready to do His will.
²² Give praise to the Eternal, all that He has made
    in all corners of His creation.
O my soul, come, praise the Eternal!

    и зелень на пользу человека,

²⁴ Господи, как многочисленны Твои дела!
    По Своей мудрости Ты все сотворил;
    земля полна Твоих созданий.
²⁵ Вот, море, богатое и пространное,
    в котором нет числа пресмыкающимся,
    животным малым и большим.
²⁶ В нем плавают корабли,
    там Левиафан^[e], которого Ты сотворил играть в нем.

²⁷ Все они ожидают от Тебя,
    чтобы Ты дал им вовремя их пищу.
²⁸ Ты даешь им – они принимают,
    открываешь Свою руку – насыщаются.
²⁹ Если скрываешь Свое лицо,
    они в смятении.
Когда отнимешь их дыхание^[f],
    умирают они и возвращаются в прах.
³⁰ Пошлешь Свой дух^[g],
    и они сотворены,
и Ты обновляешь лицо земли.

³¹ Да будет слава Господня вовеки;
    да возрадуется Господь Своим делам!
³² Он смотрит на землю, и трепещет она,
    прикасается к холмам, и дымятся они.

³³ Буду петь Господу, пока я жив;
    воспою хвалу моему Богу, пока существую.
³⁴ Да будет приятно Ему размышление мое,
    буду радоваться о Господе.
³⁵ Пусть исчезнут грешники с лица земли,
    и не будет больше беззаконных.

Прославь, душа моя, Господа!

Psalm 143 – The Voice

A song of David.

Eternal One, I come to You in prayer.

    Hear me out; I plead with You.
    Lend an ear to my requests.
    In Your faithfulness and justice, respond to my pleas.
 

² Be kind and slow to judge Your faithful servant,
    for compared to You, no one is truly just.

³ My adversary has pressed in, drawn closer, threatened my life;
    he’s crushed me, driven me underground.
    He’s forced me to live in the dark;
    it’s as if I joined those who died a long time ago.
 

⁴ That’s why my spirit is growing faint inside me; I have nothing left;
    my heart is completely empty and desolate.

⁵ And yet I can’t forget the days of old, the days I’ve heard so much about;
    I fix my mind on all You have done;
    I ponder the work of Your hands;
 

⁶ I reach out my hands to You.
    All that I am aches and yearns for You, like a dry land thirsting for rain.

⁷ Hurry and answer me, O Eternal One,
    for my spirit is weak, my courage is gone.
Do not turn away; let me see Your face;
    otherwise, I’ll die and be like all those who have gone to the grave.
 

⁸ Make me hear of Your faithful love in the morning,
    for I trust in You.
Teach me how I should walk,
    for I offer my soul up to You.

⁹ Rescue me from my enemies, Eternal One,
    for You are my shelter from them.
 

¹⁰ Teach me how to do Your will,
    for You are my God.
Allow Your good Spirit to guide me
    on level ground, to guide me along Your path.2

¹¹ For the sake of Your name and the good of Your reputation,
    preserve me, O Eternal One.
    In Your righteousness, save my life from burden and misery.
 

¹² In Your loyal love, silence my enemies for good;
    destroy all those who take pleasure in my suffering,
    for I am Your faithful servant!

Isaiah 62:1-5; 10-12 – The Voice

I will not keep quiet for Zion’s sake;
    I will not remain silent
Until Jerusalem’s justice shines like the light of a new day
    and her liberation blazes like a torch in the dead of night.
 

² Jerusalem, the nations of the world will witness your righteousness,
    the most powerful world leaders will see your brilliance,
And you will be called something new, something brand new,
    a name given by none other than the Eternal One.
 

³ And you will be the crowning glory of the Eternal’s power,
    a royal crown cradled in His palm and held aloft by your God for all to see.
 

⁴ People won’t talk about you anymore
    using words like “forsaken” or “empty.”
Instead, you will be called “My delight” and the land around you “Married,”
    because the Eternal is pleased with you and has bound Himself to your land.
 

⁵ As a young man marries the woman he loves,
    so your sons will marry you, Jerusalem.
As a groom takes joy in his bride,
    so your God will take joy in you.

⁶ I have stationed watchmen on your walls, Jerusalem.
    Day and night, they never stop calling out.
You, too, must not rest or grow silent;
    keep reminding the Eternal to watch over Jerusalem.
 

⁷ Tirelessly pester God—give Him no rest—until He reestablishes Jerusalem
    and makes it worthy of praise throughout the whole world.
 

⁸ The Eternal has promised with all divine power and might:

Eternal One: I will never again turn over your assets to your enemies,
        never feed them from your grain stores
    Or give them the wine you have labored to produce.
 

⁹     Instead, those who harvest the grain will eat its bounty,
        and offer praise to the Eternal;
    And those who gather the grapes will drink of their richness
        in the courtyards outside the temple.

¹⁰ So ready yourselves to pass through the gates, from old to new.
    Clear the way for the people;
Make it clear, easy, and straight.
    Unfurl the banners that proclaim these people are renewed!
 

¹¹ For none other than the Eternal has announced for all to hear—

A divine drama is played out with the chorus on one side, the soloist on the other. The “people” ask a question, and God rings out a response. Dramatic, to say the least. What trials and tribulations the Israelites have been through! What highs and lows! It is all God’s doing in response to their faithlessness. But this is history, and now they find themselves living and working in a brand new time; a new day is coming—of restoration, peace, and glorious reputation for God’s people such as they’ve never had before. The renewal is international in scope, without peer in the world. And this, too, is God’s doing. His capacity for mercy is great. He loves His people beyond comprehension. This is why He should be recognized and appreciated by all as the one True God. He keeps saving and delivering, restoring and supporting the people, just as God has done since that moment of binding promise made so long ago.

Eternal One: Say to the daughter of Zion
 

        “See, your salvation is coming; your liberation is on the way—
    God’s reward is with Him: His work is by His side.”

¹² And they will be called “The Holy People, Redeemed by the Eternal”;
    Jerusalem’s new name will be “Desirable City, No Longer Forsaken.”

Revelation 19:11-16 – The Voice

I looked up and saw that heaven had opened. Suddenly, a white horse appeared. Its rider is called Faithful and True, and with righteousness He exercises judgment and wages war. ¹² His eyes burn like a flaming fire, and on His head are many crowns. His name was written before the creation of the world, and no one knew it except He Himself. ¹³ He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood, and the name He was known by is The Word of God. ¹⁴ And the armies of heaven, outfitted in fine linen, white and pure, were following behind Him on white steeds. ¹⁵ From His mouth darts a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations. He will rule over them with a scepter made of iron. He will trample the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God, the All Powerful. ¹⁶ And there on His robe and on His thigh was written His name: King of kings and Lord of lords.

Matthew 2:13-23 – The Voice

After the wise men left, a messenger of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream.

Messenger of the Lord (to Joseph): Get up, take the child and His mother, and head to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you it is safe to leave. For Herod understands that Jesus threatens him and all he stands for. He is planning to search for the child and kill Him. But you will be safe in Egypt.

¹⁴ So Joseph got up in the middle of the night; he bundled up Mary and Jesus, and they left for Egypt.^[a]

¹⁶ After a few months had passed, Herod realized he’d been tricked. The wise men were not coming back. Herod, of course, was furious. He simply ordered that all boys who lived in or near Bethlehem and were two years of age and younger be killed. He knew the baby King was this age because of what the wise men told him.

Herod knows ordinary babies will die in this purge, but he doesn’t care—Herod is not so much cold-blooded as pragmatic, willing to do whatever is necessary to kill this new supposed King. And so all those other baby boys die. But, of course, Herod’s plan ultimately fails. He doesn’t know the baby Savior has been whisked to safety in Egypt.

¹⁷ This sad event had long been foretold by the prophet Jeremiah:

¹⁸ A voice will be heard in Ramah,
    weeping and wailing and mourning out loud all day and night.
The voice is Rachel’s, weeping for her children,
    her children who have been killed;
    she weeps, and she will not be comforted.^[b]

¹⁵ Joseph, Mary, and Jesus stayed in Egypt until Herod died. This fulfilled yet another prophecy. The prophet Hosea once wrote, “Out of Egypt I called My Son.”

¹⁹ And after Herod died, a messenger of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt:

Messenger of the Lord: ²⁰ You may go home now. Take the child and His mother and go back to the land of Israel, for the people who were trying to take the child’s life are now dead.

²¹ So Joseph got up and took Mary and Jesus and returned to the land of Israel. ²² Soon he learned that Archelaus, Herod’s oldest and notoriously brutal son, was ruling Judea. Archelaus might not be any friendlier than Herod had been. Joseph was simply afraid. He had another dream, and in this dream, he was warned away from Judea; so Joseph decided to settle up north in a district called Galilee, ²³ in a town called Nazareth. And this, too, fulfilled what the prophets have taught, “The Savior will be a Nazarene.”
