Psalm 2 – The Voice

You are wondering: What has provoked the nations to embrace anger and chaos?^[a]
    Why are the people making plans to pursue their own vacant and empty greatness?

² Leaders of nations stand united;
    rulers put their heads together,
    plotting against the Eternal One and His Anointed King, trying to figure out

³ How they can throw off the gentle reign of God’s love,
    step out from under the restrictions of His claims to advance their own schemes.

⁴ At first, the Power of heaven laughs at their silliness.
    The Eternal mocks their ignorant selfishness.
⁵ But His laughter turns to rage, and He rebukes them.

    As God displays His righteous anger, they begin to know the meaning of fear. He says,

⁶ “I am the One who appointed My king who reigns from Zion, My mount of holiness.
    He is the one in charge.”

⁷ I am telling all of you the truth. I have heard the Eternal’s decree.
He said clearly to me, “You are My son.
    Today I have become your Father.
⁸ The nations shall be yours for the asking,
    and the entire earth will belong to you.
⁹ They are yours to crush with an iron scepter,
    yours to shatter like fragile, clay pots.”

¹⁰ So leaders, kings, and judges,
    be wise, and be warned.
¹¹ There is only one God, the Eternal;
    worship Him with respect and awe;
    take delight in Him and tremble.

¹² Bow down before God’s son.
    If you don’t, you will face His anger and retribution,
And you won’t stand a chance.
    For it doesn’t take long to kindle royal wrath,

But blessings await all who trust in Him.
    They will find God a gentle refuge.

Psalm 110 – The Voice

A song of David.

Psalm 110 may have been written to celebrate the coronation of one of David’s sons as king. The Eternal invites the royal son of David to take his rightful place at His right hand, the place of power and authority—not just over Jerusalem but over his enemies as well. But the royal son is to be more than a king, he is to be a priest according the order of that mysterious and enigmatic figure, Melchizedek (Genesis 14:17-24). God promises to give this royal priest-king victory over his enemies as he marches out to war.

This psalm is the psalm most quoted by early Christian writers in the New Testament. As they considered the significance of Jesus, they found that this psalm, more than any, expressed their conviction that the risen Jesus now occupies a unique place at God’s right hand and will be victorious over His enemies.

¹ The Eternal said to my lord,
    “Sit here at My right hand,
    in the place of honor and power,
And I will gather your enemies together,
    lead them in on hands and knees;
    you will rest your feet on their backs.”

² The Eternal will extend your reach as you rule
    from your throne on Zion.
    You will be out in enemy lands, ruling.
³ Your people will come as volunteers that day; they will be a sight to see:
    on that day, you will lead your army, noble in their holiness.
As the new day dawns and dew settles on the grass,
    your young volunteers will make their way to you.
⁴ The Eternal has sworn an oath
    and cannot change His mind:

“You are a priest forever—
    in the honored order of Melchizedek.”

⁵ The lord is at Your right hand;
    on the day that his fury comes to its peak, he will crush kings.

⁶ You will see the dead in heaps at the roadside,
    corpses spread far and wide in valleys and on hillsides.
Rulers and military leaders will lie among them without distinction.
    This will be his judgment on the nations.

⁷ There is a brook along the way.
    He will stop there and drink;
And when he is finished,
    he will raise his head.

A song of David.

¹ Give all credit to the Eternal, O heavenly creatures;
    give praise to Him for His glory and power.
² Give to the Eternal the glory due His name;
    worship Him with lavish displays of sacred splendor.

³ The voice of the Eternal echoes over the great waters;
    God’s magnificence roars like thunder.
    The Eternal’s presence hovers over all the waters.
⁴ His voice explodes in great power over the earth.
    His voice is both regal and grand.

⁵ The Eternal’s voice shatters the cedars;
    His power splinters the great cedars of Lebanon.
⁶ He speaks, and Lebanon leaps like a young calf;
    Sirion jumps like a wild, youthful ox.

⁷ The voice of the Eternal cuts through with flames of fire.

⁸ The voice of the Eternal rumbles through the wilderness
    with great quakes;
    He causes Kadesh to tremble.

⁹ The Eternal’s voice brings life from the doe’s womb;
    His voice strips the forest bare,
    and all the people in the temple declare, “Glory!”

¹⁰ The Eternal is enthroned over the great flood;
    His reign is unending.
¹¹ We ask You, Eternal One, to give strength to Your people;

Psalm 98 – The Voice

A song.

¹ Compose a new song, and sing it to the Eternal
    because of the unbelievable things He has done;
He has won the victory
    with the skill of His right hand and strength of His holy arm.

² The Eternal has made it clear that He saves,
    and He has shown the nations that He does what is right.

³ He has been true to His promises;
    fresh in His mind is His unfailing love
    for all of Israel.

Even the ends of the earth have witnessed how our God saves.

This hymn invites all the people on earth and creation itself to join in singing a new song of “beautiful noise” celebrating God’s justice and victories.

⁴ Raise your voices; make a beautiful noise to the Eternal, all the earth.
    Let your joy explode into song and praise;

⁵ Make music to the Eternal with the harp;
    sing a beautiful melody with the harp and chorus.

⁶ With trumpets and horns,
    fill the air with joyful sounds to the King, the Eternal.

⁷ Let the sea rumble and roar, and all the creatures it holds shout praise;
    let the whole world and all those who live in it join the celebration.

⁸ Let the rivers applaud
    and the mountains join in joyful song
⁹ In the presence of the Eternal because He is coming
    to judge the earth.

He is coming,
    and His judgment will be what is right for the world
    and just to all people.

Jonah 2:2-9 – The Voice

Jonah reveals in his prayer a change of heart: he thanks God for saving him from the angry sea.

² Jonah: With desperate cries
        I beckoned the Eternal to hear, and He answered me.
    From the belly, the place of death, I cried out to You,
        and You have responded to my voice.
³     You threw me into the watery depths
        and cast me into the middle of the chaotic seas.
    The waters closed in around me;
        Your waves broke over me;
        Your surf swelled as I sank into the depths.
⁴     But then I said to You,
        “I have been driven out from before Your very eyes.
        Still, I know I will gaze again on Your holy temple.”
⁵     The waters swallowed me;
        the deep abyss was covering over me.
    Seaweeds were wrapped around my head, trapping me
⁶         as I sank down to where the mountains are rooted to the earth.
    I went down to the place where death’s gate would lock me in forever.

    Yet You lifted me up from the pit.
        Eternal One, You are my God!
⁷     Only as my life was fading way

Isaiah 66:18-23 – The Voice

Because I know what and why they do what they do, the time is coming when I will bring people together from all over the world. Everyone will come here and have a chance to see and know who I am, in all My weighty significance and splendor. ¹⁹ I will put a sign among them and send the survivors of My people to Tarshish, Put, and Lud (where those great archers live), from Tubal east of Lud, and Javan, which is near it. I’ll bring them here from places so far away that they’ve never heard My name, much less had a chance to see My glory. But they’ll hear about Me, far and wide among the nations.

²⁰ And they will bring the surviving members of your family back as if they are a grain offering from all the nations. They’ll come by every conceivable means—on horse, camel, donkey, or mule, in wagons or litters—they’ll come to Jerusalem, My holy mountain. They will be delivered just as the Israelites bring their grain offerings to Me in a clean container at the temple. ²¹ And out of those who return, I will make priests and Levites. This is My word to you.

²²     Because just as the new heavens and the new earth that I am making
        will go on by My enduring will,
    So your name and the people
        who come from you will go on as well.
²³     From one month to the next, on Sabbath after Sabbath,
        everyone, every living thing, will come to this holy place
    To honor Me as God of all.

Ephesians 6:10-20 – The Voice

¹⁰ Finally, brothers and sisters, draw your strength and might from God. ¹¹ Put on the full armor of God to protect yourselves from the devil and his evil schemes. ¹² We’re not waging war against enemies of flesh and blood alone. No, this fight is against tyrants, against authorities, against supernatural powers and demon princes that slither in the darkness of this world, and against wicked spiritual armies that lurk about in heavenly places.
¹³ And this is why you need to be head-to-toe in the full armor of God: so you can resist during these evil days and be fully prepared to hold your ground. ¹⁴ Yes, stand—truth banded around your waist, righteousness as your chest plate, ¹⁵ and feet protected in preparation to proclaim the good news of peace. ¹⁶ Don’t forget to raise the shield of faith above all else, so you will be able to extinguish flaming spears hurled at you from the wicked one. ¹⁷ Take also the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

Paul knows that the real battles and dangers we face are not against flesh and blood. The enemies we see are real enough, but they are animated by spiritual forces of darkness that stay strategically hidden from view. These powers often reveal themselves in institutional evils—genocide, terror, tyranny, and oppression—but the weapons needed to combat them are not earthly weapons at all. What is needed, Paul advises, is to stand firm in God’s power and to suit up in the full armor of God. Although the devil and his demon armies are destined for destruction, they are serious threats now and must be resisted and beaten back. For Paul, the best offensive weapons we have are the word of God and prayer.

¹⁸ Pray always. Pray in the Spirit. Pray about everything in every way you know how! And keeping all this in mind, pray on behalf of God’s people. Keep on praying feverishly, and be on the lookout until evil has been stayed. ¹⁹ And please pray for me. Pray that truth will be with me before I even open my mouth. Ask the Spirit to guide me while I boldly defend the mystery that is the good news— ²⁰ for which I am an ambassador in chains—so pray that I can bravely pronounce the truth, as I should do.

Romans 5:7-13 – The Voice

Now it is rare to find someone willing to die for an upright person, although it’s possible that someone may give up his life for one who is truly good. ⁸ But think about this: while we were wasting our lives in sin, God revealed His powerful love to us in a tangible display—the Anointed One died for us. ⁹ As a result, the blood of Jesus has made us right with God now, and certainly we will be rescued by Him from God’s wrath in the future. ¹⁰ If we were in the heat of combat with God when His Son reconciled us by laying down His life, then how much more will we be saved by Jesus’ resurrection life? ¹¹ In fact, we stand now reconciled and at peace with God. That’s why we celebrate in God through our Lord Jesus, the Anointed.
¹² Consider this: sin entered our world through one man, Adam; and through sin, death followed in hot pursuit. Death spread rapidly to infect all people on the earth as they engaged in sin.

God’s gift of grace and salvation is amazing. Paul struggles to find the words to describe it. He looks everywhere around him to find a metaphor, an image, a word to put into language one aspect of this awesome gift. One of those is “reconciliation.” There is hardly anything more beautiful than to see two people who have been enemies or estranged or separated coming back together. When Paul reflects on what God has done through Jesus, he thinks about reconciliation. Before we receive God’s blessing through His Son, we are enemies of God, sinners of the worst sort. But God makes the first move to restore us to a right relationship with Him.

¹³ Before God gave the law, sin existed, but there was no way to account for it. Outside the law, how could anyone be charged and found guilty of sin?

John 11:7-27, 38-44 – The Voice

Jesus (speaking to the disciples): ⁷ It is time to return to Judea.

Disciples: ⁸ Teacher, the last time You were there, some Jews attempted to execute You by crushing You with stones. Why would You go back?

Jesus: ⁹ There are 12 hours of daylight, correct? If anyone walks in the day, that person does not stumble because he or she sees the light of the world. ¹⁰ If anyone walks at night, he will trip and fall because he does not have the light within. ¹¹ (Jesus briefly pauses.) Our friend Lazarus has gone to sleep, so I will go to awaken him.

Disciples: ¹² Lord, if he is sleeping, then he will be all right.

¹³ Jesus used “sleep” as a metaphor for death, but the disciples took Him literally and did not understand. ¹⁴ Then Jesus spoke plainly.

Jesus: Lazarus is dead, ¹⁵ and I am grateful for your sakes that I was not there when he died. Now you will see and believe. Gather yourselves, and let’s go to him.

Thomas, the Twin (to the disciples): ¹⁶ Let’s go so we can die with Him.

^17-18 As Jesus was approaching Bethany (which is about two miles east of Jerusalem), He heard that Lazarus had been in the tomb four days. ¹⁹ Now many people had come to comfort Mary and Martha as they mourned the loss of their brother. ²⁰ Martha went to meet Jesus when word arrived that He was approaching Bethany, but Mary stayed behind at the house.

Martha: ²¹ Lord, if You had been with us, my brother would not have died. ²² Even so I still believe that anything You ask of God will be done.

Jesus: ²³ Your brother will rise to life.

Martha: ²⁴ I know. He will rise again when everyone is resurrected on the last day.

Jesus: ²⁵ I am the resurrection and the source of all life; those who believe in Me will live even in death. ²⁶ Everyone who lives and believes in Me will never truly die. Do you believe this?

Martha: ²⁷ Yes, Lord, I believe that You are the Anointed, the Liberating King, God’s own Son who we have heard is coming into the world.

²⁸ After this Martha ran home to Mary.

Martha (whispering to Mary): Come with me. The Teacher is here, and He has asked for you.

²⁹ Mary did not waste a minute. She got up and went ³⁰ to the same spot where Martha had found Jesus outside the village. ³¹ The people gathered in her home offering support and comfort assumed she was going back to the tomb to cry and mourn, so they followed her. ³² Mary approached Jesus, saw Him, and fell at His feet.

Mary: Lord, if only You had been here, my brother would still be alive.

³³ When Jesus saw Mary’s profound grief and the moaning and weeping of her companions, He was deeply moved by their pain in His spirit and was intensely troubled.

Jesus: ³⁴ Where have you laid his body?

Jews: Come and see, Lord.

³⁵ As they walked, Jesus wept; ³⁶ and everyone noticed how much Jesus must have loved Lazarus. ³⁷ But others were skeptical.

Others: If this man can give sight to the blind, He could have kept him from dying.

They are asking, if Jesus loves Lazarus so much, why didn’t He get here much sooner?

³⁸ Then Jesus, who was intensely troubled by all of this, approached the tomb—a small cave covered by a massive stone.

Jesus: ³⁹ Remove the stone.

Martha: Lord, he has been dead four days; the stench will be unbearable.

Jesus: ⁴⁰ Remember, I told you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God.

⁴¹ They removed the stone, and Jesus lifted His eyes toward heaven.

Jesus: Father, I am grateful that You have heard Me. ⁴² I know that You are always listening, but I proclaim it loudly so that everyone here will believe You have sent Me.

⁴³ After these words, He called out in a thunderous voice.

Jesus: Lazarus, come out!

⁴⁴ Then, the man who was dead walked out of his tomb bound from head to toe in a burial shroud.

Jesus: Untie him, and let him go.

⁷ а затем сказал Своим ученикам: «Давайте вернёмся в Иудею».
⁸ Но ученики Ему сказали: «Учитель, местные иудеи только что пытались побить тебя камнями, и Ты хочешь возвратиться туда?»
⁹ Иисус ответил: «Разве не двенадцать часов в дне? Если человек идёт днём, то не спотыкается, так как видит дневной свет ^[a]. ¹⁰ Если же он идёт ночью, то спотыкается, так как нет света, помогающего ему видеть».
¹¹ Сказав так, Он добавил: «Наш друг Лазарь уснул, но Я пойду и разбужу его».
¹² Ученики ответили на это: «Господи, раз он уснул, то поправится».
¹³ Иисус говорил о смерти Лазаря, а они подумали, что Иисус говорит о том, что тот просто заснул. ¹⁴ Тогда Иисус прямо сказал им: «Лазарь умер. ¹⁵ И я рад за вас, что Меня там не было, так как сейчас вы сможете поверить. Но пойдёмте к нему».
¹⁶ Тогда Фома, по прозванию Близнец, сказал другим ученикам Иисуса: «Пойдём и мы, чтобы умереть вместе с Иисусом».

Иисус — воскресение и жизнь

¹⁷ Когда Иисус пришёл в Вифанию, то узнал, что Лазарь уже четыре дня лежит в гробнице. ¹⁸ Вифания находилась всего лишь километрах в трёх от Иерусалима, ¹⁹ и многие иудеи пришли к Марфе и Марии, чтобы утешить их в печали о брате.
²⁰ Марфа, услышав, что Иисус пришёл, вышла к Нему навстречу, Мария же оставалась в доме. ²¹ И сказала тогда Марфа Иисусу: «Господи, если бы Ты был здесь, мой брат не умер бы. ²² Но и теперь я знаю, что Бог даст Тебе всё, что Ты попросишь».
²³ Иисус сказал ей: «Твой брат воскреснет».
²⁴ Марфа ответила: «Я знаю, что он воскреснет, когда люди воскреснут в последний день».
²⁵ Иисус сказал ей: «Я — воскресение и жизнь. Кто поверит в Меня, если даже умрёт, будет жить, ²⁶ и всякий, кто живёт и верует в Меня, никогда не умрёт. Марфа, веришь ли ты в это?»
²⁷ Она ответила: «Да, Господи! Я верую, что Ты — Христос, Сын Божий, Тот, Кто должен был прийти в мир».

Иисус плачет

²⁸ Сказав так, Марфа вернулась к своей сестре Марии и, оставшись наедине с ней, сказала: «Учитель здесь и зовёт тебя». ²⁹ Услышав это, Мария сразу же поднялась и пошла к Нему. ³⁰ Иисус в это время ещё не вошёл в селение, но находился там, где Его встретила Марфа. ³¹ Иудеи, которые были в доме вместе с Марией и утешали её, увидев, что она поспешно поднялась и вышла, последовали за ней, думая, что она пошла к гробнице, чтобы там оплакивать брата. ³² Когда Мария пришла туда, где был Иисус, и увидела Его, она пала Ему в ноги и сказала: «Господи, если бы Ты был здесь, мой брат не умер бы».
³³ Увидев, как она рыдает, и как рыдают иудеи, пришедшие с ней, Иисус почувствовал душевное смятение, Он взволновался ³⁴ и спросил: «Где вы его положили?» Они сказали Ему: «Господи, пойди, посмотри».
³⁵ Иисус прослезился.
³⁶ Тогда иудеи стали говорить: «Смотрите, как Он любил Лазаря».
³⁷ Другие же сказали: «Разве этот Человек, Который дал зрение слепому, не мог бы сделать так, чтобы Лазарь не умер?»

Иисус воскрешает Лазаря

³⁸ Иисусом опять овладело душевное смятение, и Он пошёл к гробнице. Она находилась в пещере, вход в которую преграждал камень. ³⁹ Иисус сказал: «Уберите камень».
Тогда Марфа, сестра умершего, сказала: «Господи, там теперь плохой запах, так как прошло уже четыре дня, как он умер».
⁴⁰ Иисус ответил ей: «Разве не сказал Я тебе, что если поверишь, то увидишь Славу Божью?»
⁴¹ Тогда они убрали камень. Иисус поднял глаза к небу и сказал: «Отец, благодарю Тебя за то, что Ты услышал Меня. ⁴² Я знаю, что Ты всегда слышишь Меня, но Я сказал это для народа, окружающего Меня, чтобы они поверили, что Ты послал Меня». ⁴³ Сказав это, Он воззвал громким голосом: «Лазарь, выходи!» ⁴⁴ И вышел умерший. Руки и ноги его были обвиты в погребальную ткань, а лицо его было покрыто платком.
Иисус сказал им: «Освободите его от погребальной ткани и дайте ему уйти».
