INTRODUCTION

Use of This Book as a Devotional Resource

This book is intended to be a devotional aid to help you draw closer to God.  In James 4:8, we read, “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.”  We draw closer to God through prayer, through worship, through study, and through the practice of other Christian disciplines. 

As we explore the relationship St. Teresa of Avila had with God over the next forty days – or in whatever time frame you choose to encounter this experience, we hope that your relationship with God will be strengthened.

Each page includes a structure to provide a framework for your devotion as follows:

Invocation – The Lord's Prayer and/or any prayer of your heart may be used to center your spirit and open your heart to the Holy Spirit in Christ Jesus.

Reading from the Writings of St. Teresa of Avila – The daily reading is a short passage from The Interior Castle or from the Letters of St. Teresa.

 Listening with Your Heart  – You may wish to spend some time in quiet contemplation, spending time with your heart and spiritual ear open to the Holy Spirit.

Space for Written Reflection – If you choose to write any reflections, there is space on the page, or perhaps you will wish to use a notebook or diary for this purpose.

Reading from Holy Scripture – Several scripture passages are suggested, but you may of course choose another passage or others as you feel led.

Closing Prayer – You may wish to end your devotions with a prayer of praise and thanksgiving – and/or with supplication.

Of course you may use the book in any way that seems best to you.  We pray that your time aside with the Lord will increase your peace and that by the power of His Holy Spirit, God in Christ will indeed draw you closer to His heart.
