A Prayer for Help

5 Listen, Lord, as I pray!
    Pay attention when I groan.^[a]
2 You are my King and my God.
Answer my cry for help
    because I pray to you.
³ Each morning you listen
    to my prayer,
as I bring my requests^[b] to you
    and wait for your reply.

⁴ You are not the kind of God
who is pleased with evil.
    Sinners can’t stay with you.
⁵ No one who boasts can stand
in your presence, Lord,
    and you hate evil people.
⁶ You destroy every liar,
    and you despise violence
    and deceit.

⁷ Because of your great mercy,
    I come to your house, Lord,
and I am filled with wonder
as I bow down
    to worship
    at your holy temple.
⁸ You do what is right,
    and I ask you to guide me.
    Make your teaching clear
    because of my enemies.

⁹ Nothing they say is true!
    They just want to destroy.
Their words are deceitful
    like a hidden pit,
    and their tongues are good
    only for telling lies.
¹⁰ Punish them, God,
    and let their own plans
    bring their downfall.
Get rid of them!
    They keep committing crimes
    and turning against you.

¹¹ Let all who run to you
for protection
    always sing joyful songs.
Provide shelter for those
who truly love you
    and let them rejoice.
¹² Our Lord, you bless those
    who live right,
    and you shield them
    with your kindness.

A Prayer in Time of Trouble

6 Don’t punish me, Lord,
or even correct me
    when you are angry!
² Have pity on me and heal
    my feeble body.
My bones tremble with fear,
³     and I am in deep distress.
    How long will it be?

⁴ Turn and come to my rescue.
    Show your wonderful love
    and save me, Lord.
⁵ If I die, I cannot praise you
    or even remember you.
⁶ My groaning has worn me out.
    At night my bed and pillow
    are soaked with tears.
⁷ Sorrow has made my eyes dim,
and my sight has failed
    because of my enemies.

⁸ You, Lord, heard my crying,
and those hateful people
    had better leave me alone.
⁹ You have answered my prayer
    and my plea for mercy.
¹⁰ My enemies will be ashamed
    and terrified,
    as they quickly run away
    in complete disgrace.

⁴ (5-5) ибо Ты Бог, не любящий беззакония; у Тебя не водворится злой;

⁵ (5-6) нечестивые не пребудут пред очами Твоими: Ты ненавидишь всех, делающих беззаконие.

⁶ (5-7) Ты погубишь говорящих ложь; кровожадного и коварного гнушается Господь.

⁷ (5-8) А я, по множеству милости Твоей, войду в дом Твой, поклонюсь святому храму Твоему в страхе Твоем.

⁴ (6-5) Обратись, Господи, избавь душу мою, спаси меня ради милости Твоей,

⁵ (6-6) ибо в смерти нет памятования о Тебе: во гробе кто будет славить Тебя?

Psalms 10-11 -- Contemporary English Version

A Prayer for Help

10 Why are you far away, Lord?
    Why do you hide yourself
    when I am in trouble?
 

² Proud and brutal people
    hunt down the poor.
    But let them get caught
    by their own evil plans!

³ The wicked brag about
    their deepest desires.
    Those greedy people hate
    and curse you, Lord.
 

⁴ The wicked are too proud
to turn to you
    or even think about you.
 

⁵ They are always successful,
though they can’t understand
    your teachings,
    and they keep sneering
    at their enemies.

⁶ In their hearts they say,
    “Nothing can hurt us!
    We’ll always be happy
    and free from trouble.”
 

⁷ They curse and tell lies,
and all they talk about
    is how to be cruel
    or how to do wrong.

⁸ They hide outside villages,
    waiting to strike and murder
    some innocent victim.
⁹ They are hungry lions
    hiding in the bushes,
    hoping to catch
    some helpless passerby.
They trap the poor in nets
    and drag them away.
 

¹⁰ They crouch down and wait
    to grab a victim.
 

¹¹     They say, “God can’t see!
    He’s got on a blindfold.”

¹² Do something, Lord God,
    and use your powerful arm
    to help those in need.
 

¹³ The wicked don’t respect you.
    In their hearts they say,
    “God won’t punish us!”

¹⁴ But you see the trouble
and the distress,
    and you will do something.
The poor can count on you,
    and so can orphans.
 

¹⁵ Now break the arms
    of all merciless people.
    Punish them for doing wrong
    and make them stop.

¹⁶ Our Lord, you will always rule,
    but nations will vanish
    from the earth.
 

¹⁷ You listen to the longings
    of those who suffer.
You offer them hope,
    and you pay attention
    to their cries for help.
 

¹⁸ You defend orphans
    and everyone else in need,
    so that no one on earth
    can terrify others again.

Trusting the Lord

11 The Lord is my fortress!
    Don’t say to me,
    “Escape like a bird
    to the mountains!”
 

² You tell me, “Watch out!
Those evil people
    have put
    their arrows on their bows,
and they are standing
in the shadows,
    aiming at good people.
 

³ What can an honest person do
    when everything crumbles?”

⁴ The Lord is sitting
in his sacred temple
    on his throne in heaven.
He knows everything we do
    because he sees us all.
 

⁵ The Lord tests honest people,
but despises those
    who are cruel
    and love violence.
 

⁶ He will send fiery coals^[a]
and flaming sulfur
    down on the wicked,
and they will drink nothing
    but a scorching wind.

⁷ The Lord always does right
    and wants justice done.
    Everyone who does right
    will see his face.

⁵ (10-5) Господь испытывает праведного, а нечестивого и любящего насилие ненавидит душа Его.

Exodus 15:1-21 -- Contemporary English Version

The Song of Moses

15 Moses and the Israelites sang this song in praise of the Lord:

I sing praises to the Lord
    for his great victory!
He has thrown the horses
and their riders
    into the sea.
² The Lord is my strength,
the reason for my song,
    because he has saved me.
I praise and honor the Lord—
he is my God
and the God
    of my ancestors.
³ The Lord is his name,
    and he is a warrior!
⁴ He threw the chariots and army
of Egypt’s king^[a]
    into the Red Sea,^[b]
and he drowned the best
    of the king’s officers.
⁵ They sank to the bottom
    just like stones.

⁶ With the tremendous force
of your right arm, our Lord,
    you crushed your enemies.
⁷ What a great victory was yours,
as you defeated everyone
    who opposed you.
Your fiery anger wiped them out,
    as though they were straw.
⁸ You were so furious
that the sea piled up
    like a wall,
and the ocean depths
    curdled like cheese.

⁹ Your enemies boasted
    that they would
pursue and capture us,
divide up our possessions,
treat us as they wished,
then take out their swords
    and kill us right there.
¹⁰ But when you got furious,
they sank like lead,
    swallowed by ocean waves.

¹¹ Our Lord, no other gods
compare with you—
    Majestic and holy!
    Fearsome and glorious!
    Miracle worker!
¹² When you signaled
    with your right hand,
your enemies were swallowed
    deep into the earth.

¹³ The people you rescued
were led by your powerful love
    to your holy place.
¹⁴ Nations learned of this
    and trembled—
Philistines shook with horror.
¹⁵ The leaders of Edom and of Moab
    were terrified.
Everyone in Canaan fainted,
¹⁶     struck down by fear.
Our Lord, your powerful arm
    kept them still as a rock
until the people you rescued
for your very own
    had marched by.

    on your chosen mountain,
where you built your home
    and your temple.

The Song of Miriam

¹⁹ The Lord covered the royal Egyptian cavalry and chariots with the sea, after the Israelites had walked safely through on dry ground. ²⁰ Miriam the sister of Aaron was a prophet. So she took her tambourine and led the other women out to play their tambourines and to dance. ²¹ Then she sang to them:

“Sing praises to the Lord
    for his great victory!
He has thrown the horses
and their riders into the sea.”

1 Peter 1:13-25-- Contemporary English Version

Chosen To Live a Holy Life

¹³ Be alert and think straight. Put all your hope in how kind God will be to you when Jesus Christ appears. ¹⁴ Behave like obedient children. Don’t let your lives be controlled by your desires, as they used to be. ¹⁵ Always live as God’s holy people should, because God is the one who chose you, and he is holy. ¹⁶ That’s why the Scriptures say, “I am the holy God, and you must be holy too.”

¹⁷ You say that God is your Father, but God doesn’t have favorites! He judges all people by what they do. So you must honor God while you live as strangers here on earth. ¹⁸ You were rescued^[a] from the useless way of life that you learned from your ancestors. But you know that you were not rescued by such things as silver or gold that don’t last forever. ¹⁹ You were rescued by the precious blood of Christ, that spotless and innocent lamb. ²⁰ Christ was chosen even before the world was created, but because of you, he did not come until these last days. ²¹ And when he did come, it was to lead you to have faith in God, who raised him from death and honored him in a glorious way. That’s why you have put your faith and hope in God.

²² You obeyed the truth,^[b] and your souls were made pure. Now you sincerely love each other. But you must keep on loving with all your heart. ²³ Do this because God has given you new birth by his message that lives on forever. ²⁴ The Scriptures say,

“Humans wither like grass,
and their glory fades
    like wild flowers.
Grass dries up,
and flowers fall
    to the ground.
²⁵ But what the Lord has said
    will stand forever.”

Our good news to you is what the Lord has said.

Храните самообладание, полностью надейтесь на благодать, которая будет вам дана, когда явится Иисус Христос. ¹⁴ Как послушные дети не позволяйте управлять собой желаниям, жившим в вас, когда вы еще пребывали в неведении. ¹⁵ Но будьте святы во всем, что бы вы ни делали, как свят Тот, Кто призвал вас, ¹⁶ так как написано: «Будьте святы, потому что Я свят»^[a].

¹⁷ Если вы называете Отцом Того, Кто беспристрастно судит каждого по делам, то, будучи странниками на этой земле, проводите вашу жизнь в почтительном страхе перед Ним. ¹⁸ Ведь вы знаете, что не такими тленными вещами, как серебро или золото, вы были выкуплены от бессмысленной жизни, переданной вам по наследству предками, ¹⁹ но драгоценной кровью Христа, как чистого и непорочного ягненка. ²⁰ Он был предопределен еще до создания мира, но ради вас был явлен в конце времен.  

²¹ Через Него вы и верите в Бога, воскресившего Его из мертвых и прославившего Его, чтобы вы имели веру и надежду на Бога.

²² Послушанием истине вы очистили ваши души для того, чтобы искренне любить своих братьев. Итак, глубоко любите друг друга от чистого сердца! ²³ Вы были заново рождены не от тленного семени, а от нетленного, живого и вечнопребывающего Божьего слова, ²⁴ потому что

    «все люди^[b] – как трава,
и вся их^[c] слава – как полевые цветы.
    Трава засыхает, и цветы опадают,
²⁵ но слово Господа пребывает вовек»^[d].

Это и есть слово возвещаемой вам Радостной Вести.

John 14:18-31 -- Contemporary English Version

¹⁸ I won’t leave you like orphans. I will come back to you. ¹⁹ In a little while the people of this world won’t be able to see me, but you will see me. And because I live, you will live. ²⁰ Then you will know that I am one with the Father. You will know that you are one with me, and I am one with you. ²¹ If you love me, you will do what I have said, and my Father will love you. I will also love you and show you what I am like.

²² The other Judas, not Judas Iscariot,^[a] then spoke up and asked, “Lord, what do you mean by saying that you will show us what you are like, but you will not show the people of this world?”

²³ Jesus replied:

If anyone loves me, they will obey me. Then my Father will love them, and we will come to them and live in them. ²⁴ But anyone who doesn’t love me, won’t obey me. What they have heard me say doesn’t really come from me, but from the Father who sent me.

²⁵ I have told you these things while I am still with you. ²⁶ But the Holy Spirit will come and help^[b] you, because the Father will send the Spirit to take my place. The Spirit will teach you everything and will remind you of what I said while I was with you.

²⁷ I give you peace, the kind of peace that only I can give. It isn’t like the peace that this 
world can give. So don’t be worried or afraid.

²⁸ You have already heard me say that I am going and that I will also come back to you. If you really love me, you should be glad that I am going back to the Father, because he is greater than I am.

²⁹ I am telling you this before I leave, so that when it does happen, you will have faith in me.  
³⁰ I cannot speak with you much longer, because the ruler of this world is coming. But he has no power over me. ³¹ I obey my Father, so that everyone in the world might know that I love him.
It is time for us to go now.

Я живу, и поэтому вы тоже будете жить. ²⁰ В тот день вы узнаете, что Я в Моем Отце, а вы во Мне, и Я в вас. ²¹ Кто хранит Мои заповеди и исполняет их, тот и любит Меня. Того, кто любит Меня, полюбит Мой Отец, и Я тоже буду любить его и открою Себя ему.

²² Тогда Иуда (не Искариот) сказал:

– Господи, но почему Ты хочешь открыть Себя только нам, а не всему миру?

²³ Иисус ответил:

– Кто любит Меня, тот будет соблюдать Мое слово, и того полюбит Мой Отец, к тому Мы придем и будем жить у него. ²⁴ Тот, кто Меня не любит, не будет и соблюдать Моих слов. Слово же, которое вы слышите, – не Мое, оно принадлежит пославшему Меня Отцу.

²⁵ Все это Я сказал вам, пока еще нахожусь с вами. ²⁶ Заступник же, Святой Дух, Которого Отец пошлет вам во Имя Мое, научит вас всему и напомнит вам все, о чем Я вам говорил. ²⁷ Я оставляю вам мир. Мой мир Я даю вам. Я даю вам не так, как дает этот мир. Пусть ничто не тревожит ваше сердце. Не бойтесь! ²⁸ Вы слышали, что Я сказал вам: «Я ухожу от вас, но Я опять возвращусь к вам». Если бы вы любили Меня, то радовались бы тому, что Я иду к Отцу, потому что Отец больше Меня. ²⁹ Говорю вам обо всем заранее, чтобы, когда это произойдет, вы поверили Мне. ³⁰ Больше Я уже не буду говорить вам, потому что приближается князь этого мира. У него нет власти надо Мной, ³¹ но мир должен узнать, что Я люблю Отца и что Я делаю то, что Отец Мне повелел. Вставайте, пойдем отсюда.
